CORNELL (US) ? Mutations to the p53 gene have been linked to half of all cancers, and now researchers have identified how the gene controls cell movement and invasion into other areas of the body.

Previous research has shown that mutations of the p53 gene lead to tumor growth and the spread of cancerous cells.

Using cultures of ovarian surface epithelium cells, where ovarian cancer originates, researchers found when they inactivated the p53 gene, the cells began to move and invade the underlying gelatinous protein mixture used in the lab that resembles an extracellular tissue environment.

?People thought that cell motility and invasion were part of later stages of cancer, but we show that this characteristic can be found in cells at the very beginning of cancer formation,? says Chang-Il Hwang, a graduate student in the lab of Alexander Nikitin, professor of biomedical sciences at Cornell University.

Under normal circumstances, p53 regulates the expression of a receptor protein called MET. But when p53 mutates, MET overexpresses, leading to cell movement and invasive growth.

Researchers report in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences they found two distinct pathways by which p53 regulates and suppresses MET.

?One of the next steps is to study ways to inhibit MET,? says Hwang. ?Our findings support the idea that suppression of MET could be a particularly reasonable and effective approach to controlling cancer carrying p53 mutations.

?We hope our findings can be generalized into other types of cancer as well.?

The research shows the p53 and MET network were consistent in both lung and colon cancer.

Mutations of p53 take many forms, with the most common mutation affecting one of the pathways that regulates MET but not the other pathway. By understanding how different p53 mutations affect each of the two pathways, researchers may one day develop individualized cancer therapies by suppressing MET, says Hwang.

?Different p53 mutations may affect the cancer from different angles,? he adds.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer, Cornell?s College of Veterinary Medicine and the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.

?The graying of social networking sites continues, but the oldest users are still far less likely to be making regular use of these tools,? said Mary Madden, Senior Research Specialist and co-author of the report. ?While seniors are testing the waters, many Baby Boomers are beginning to make a trip to the social media pool part of their daily routine.?

In a separate question, when social networking users were asked for one word to describe their experiences using social networking sites, ?good? was the most common response (above). Overall, positive responses far outweighed the negative and neutral words that were associated with social networking sites (more than half of the respondents used positive terms). Users repeatedly described their experiences as ?fun,? ?great,? ?interesting? and ?convenient.? Less common were superlatives such as ?astounding,? ?necessity,? and ?empowering.?

?Social networking sites continue to cement their place as a significant part of mainstream online life,? said Kathryn Zickuhr, a Research Specialist and co-author of the report. ?Even as some users find their experiences with social networking sites frustrating or overwhelming, most seem to view the services positively on the whole.?

Lenovo ThinkPad T420s

The battle for the lightest 14-inch business laptop is waged among a small handful of PC manufacturers, none more distinguished than Lenovo. The latest laptop in Lenovo's ThinkPad series of business laptops, the Lenovo ThinkPad T420s ($1,518 direct), is as masterfully engineered as it is incredibly lightweight. Its magnesium enclosure protects some of the most advanced parts, and the laptop has arguably the best user experience in the world. The last time we looked at the ThinkPad T series, its meager battery scores weren't the kind that can last through a grueling travel schedule. This time around, thanks to an overhaul that included Intel Sandy Bridge technology, the T420s has the battery chops to battle its competitors?and win. Excellent battery life aside, it's a solid, all-around business laptop, and a must-have because it's our new Editors' Choice in the business laptop category.

Design
The all-black chassis of a ThinkPad has never gone through a major design change; The T420s looks like the ThinkPad from three years ago. Business laptops like the HP Elitebook 8560p ($1,499.99 direct, 4 stars) and Dell Latitude E6420 ($1,788 direct, 4 stars) are experimenting with brush strokes and radiant colors over their aluminum lids. Lenovo, on the other hand, refuses to change for fear of offending long-time ThinkPad users. The chassis is made of magnesium with some traces of carbon fiber, which is both accident-proof and long-lasting. To further emphasize this point, all ThinkPads, including the T420s, go through some form of ruggedized testing (drops, moisture, dust, vibration, etc.).

The T420s measures exactly an inch thick (13.3-by-9.4-by-1 inches). The slim profile is amazing, considering it has an optical drive. Other business laptops equipped with optical drives, like the Toshiba Tecra R850-S8540 ($1,349.99 direct, 3.5 stars) and Dell E6420 are noticeably bulkier. At 4 pounds, it's one of the lightest business laptop with a 14-inch screen, more than a pound lighter than the Lenovo ThinkPad T410 ($1,484 direct, 4 stars) (5.5 pounds) and Dell E6420 (6 pounds). The Panasonic Toughbook F9 and Toshiba Tecra R840 are two other 14-inch laptops weighing in the four-pound range (stay tuned for our reviews).

The 14-inch widescreen is wider now, adopting the 16:9 aspect ratio most every other laptop in the world Its 1,600-by-900 resolution is slightly higher than the 1,400-by-900 screen found in the previous Lenovo ThinkPad T410s ($1,504 direct, 4 stars). The Toshiba R850-S8540 and Dell E6420 have similar displays. Those who were a fan of the Lenovo T410s's touch screen will be sad to know that this option is no longer on the T420s.

The full size keyboard is what keeps Lenovo customers coming back year after year. It's a traditional-looking keyboard and arguably the best one in the business, despite so many other laptops moving to a chiclet-style keyboard. Dual pointing devices (pointing stick and touchpad) are only available in business laptops, and while the Dell E6420 and Toshiba R850-S8540 have excellent touchpads, their pointing sticks are no match for that of the T420s. Let's just say the vast majority of ThinkPad users swear by the pointing stick. A backlit keyboard, which you'll find on the Dell E6420, is the one feature that the T420s desperately needs, though.

Features
The integrated DVD burner is modular, meaning it can be swapped out for a 32WH battery (a $129 option that only adds a tenth of a pound to the laptop weight) that works in concert with the standard 44WH battery that snaps into the bottom of the laptop. It's a highly recommended accessory. Most of the ports are appointed to the back of the laptop. There, you'll find VGA, Ethernet, DisplayPort, and one USB 2.0 port and one USB 3.0 port, a much faster interface than USB 2.0. This leaves another USB 2.0 port and an SD slot on the left side of the laptop. Because of their thicker frames, the Dell E6420 and HP 8560p could accommodate a few more features than the T420s, such as an ExpressCard slot, modem jack, and Smart Card reader.

Above the screen is no average webcam; the T420s has one that can shoot 720p video, so you can conduct business video conference calls in high definition. The T420s also has ample wireless connectivity features, including embedded 3G (via Qualcomm's Gobi technology), 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and options for GPS and WiMAX (4G). The included 320GB, 7200rpm hard drive isn't huge, but its fast rotation speed is a huge plus for performance enthusiasts. The HP 8560p, Dell E6420, and Toshiba R850-S8540 have fast-spinning hard drives as well. There's a 128GB SSD option, which has some speed advantages over spinning drives but is costly ($280).

Performance
The 2.5GHz Intel Core i5-2520M processor, based on Sandy Bridge technology, is the same as the one found in the Dell E6420, but falls short of the Core i7 CPUs found in the Toshiba R850-S8540 and HP 8560p. Frankly, few applications in the real world would need the power of a Core i7, and ramping to one would have caused unnecessary heat issues because it's such a thin laptop. It scored 2.83 on Cinebench R11.5 and 4 minutes 5 seconds on Photoshop. This trailed the HP 8560p (3.1 on Cinebench, 3:48 on Photoshop) and Toshiba R850-S8540 (2.89 on Cinebench), but not by much. It's a really speedy laptop, judging by how fast it zipped through PCMark 7 (2,835), an overall performance gauge. It doesn't have the 3D prowess of the HP 8560p's and Toshiba R850-S8540?both of which had discrete graphics chips?but the T420s's integrated graphics solution isn't a deal breaker, either. In fact, an integrated graphics solution is more forgiving on the battery than a discrete graphics chip.

The Sandy Bridge platform comes with a wealth of improvements, the most compelling of which is lower power consumption (thus better battery yields). It has a 44WH (6-cell) battery, which is small by today's standards. Alone, it amassed 5 hours 20 minutes of battery life, which is over an hour more than the Lenovo T410s (3:58). With the additional 32WH battery, battery life soars to 8:40. The battery tandem outlasted the Dell E6420 (8:30), Toshiba R850-S8540 (6:30), and HP 8560p (3:54), which makes the T420s is a bigger asset on the road.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T420s is amazing when you realize that its power, feature set, and battery yields are usually found in much heavier laptops like the the Dell Latitude E6420. You can find a lighter 14-inch business laptop, but it won't pack in as many features as the T420s, or be priced as reasonably. It's the premier business laptop that should be at your side at all times, whether you're on the road or dwelling in an office, and is the new Editors' Choice for business laptops.

(AP) -- Small business owners are invited to meetings across South Carolina to learn how the federal health care law could affect them.

The?South Carolina Small Business Chamber of Commerce?and the advocacy group Small Business Majority are sponsoring the meetings scheduled to start Monday on Johns Island.

Other meetings are set for Tuesday in Charleston, Sept. 6 in Columbia, Sept. 13 in West Columbia and Sept. 27 in Greenville.

Items slated for discussion include small business tax credits, wellness grants and the state's work in setting up a health insurance exchange.

A question-and-answer period will follow. Panelists include small business chamber CEO Frank Knapp.

Business owners can also get details of a new health plan for small businesses. The chamber is working with Carolina Care Plan to offer the plan.

How to read "Area 51"

Interested in picking up Anne Jacobsen's "Area 51"? Before you do, let me offer some advice.

It was the late Carl Sagan who popularized the oft-repeated maxim that, ?Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.? Unfortunately for readers, investigative journalist Annie Jacobsen?s new book Area 51 doesn?t just ignore Sagan?s advice; it attacks it with a chainsaw.

First, let me bring you up to speed. You know the 1947 Roswell Incident? The one where an alien spacecraft supposedly crashed into the New Mexico desert only to be recovered and hidden by the US government? Well, Jacobsen?s book says that contrary to all the loony conspiracy theories about aliens from outer space, there is a perfectly logical, straight-forward answer to the mystery and here it is:

The Roswell UFO was a secret German flying saucer that had been captured by the Soviets after World War II and crewed by kidnapped Russian children surgically engineered by Nazi mad doctor Joseph Mengle to resemble aliens and created with the goal of sowing terror and confusion in the US populace in order to facilitate a full on Soviet attack.

See? Simple!

At least according to Jacobsen it is. In supporting the theory, she cites ?Ockham?s razor,? the famous logic test that dictates that the simplest solution to a problem (or the one requiring the least additional information) is usually the correct one.

So, for those of you keeping score, Jacobsen is implying that German flying saucers controlled by Stalin and crewed by Nazi engineered mutant children is the simplest possible solution to the Roswell Incident. Much more straightforward than the convoluted story cooked up by the US government about how the incident resulted from a popped weather balloon.

All right, enough sarcasm.

What Jacobsen is really writing about is the story of Area 51 ? the much mythologized although never officially acknowledged secret US military installation in the Nevada desert. Speculation about the site has abounded for decades now. Jacobsen ? a contributing editor at the Los Angeles Times Magazine and an investigative reporter whose work has also appeared in The National Review and The Dallas Morning News ? claims to be ready to tell you the truth (about the aliens and much else.)

But beware. She doesn't.

Although ?Area 51? contains over 100 pages worth of end-notes and citations, all information, references and accounts relating to the UFO theory come from a single anonymous engineer, who allegedly worked for defense contractor EG&G on reverse-engineering the supposed flying saucer and its surgically altered crew. And that?s it. One. Single. Source.

Actually, that?s not entirely true. Upon reading ?Area 51??s end-notes, one finds that for many of Jacobsen?s claims, she rather fancifully cites ?educated speculation? as a source.

Research led by Dr. Melinda Sothern, Professor of Public Health and Jim Finks Endowed Chair in Health Promotion at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, has found that obese 7-9-year-old children had nearly three times the liver fat and almost double the belly fat of their nonobese counterparts and that insulin resistance was more than double and insulin sensitivity less than half respectively. The study is the first to use a combination of advanced measurements in healthy obese and nonobese children in this age group prior to entering puberty. The findings are detailed in the journal, Obesity, online August 25, 2011.

?The amount of body fat as well as its location, particularly in the liver, appears to play a critical role in disease development,? notes LSUHSC?s Dr. Melinda Sothern. ?The substantial variation in biomarkers we observed in these young children suggests that obesity in this age group may disrupt normal metabolism, impairing glucose tolerance and increasing the risk for Type 2 diabetes later in life.?

The researchers studied 123 children, ages 7-9, recruited from southeast Louisiana. By BMI z-score thresholds, 23.6% of the children were obese. Although a clear definition for the metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents has not yet been established, by one set of proposed criteria, 16% of participants met the definition, and 8% met the criteria by another definition.

?Our data confirm that healthy obese young children may already be predisposed to the development of metabolic disease as has been demonstrated in adult populations,? said Dr. Sothern. ?Our findings highlight the importance of interventions to prevent and manage obesity very early in life and suggest this is a possible means of reducing metabolic disease risk and combating the increasing prevalence of Type 2 diabetes.?

Over the past 30 years, the prevalence of obesity has increased considerably. Although a recent national report indicates a leveling off of this trend, a significant portion of the pediatric population remains obese and at risk for developing metabolic diseases, particularly those related to carbohydrate metabolism. Some regions, especially areas with traditionally higher obesity prevalence rates, however, may not mirror national estimates.

The research team also included Drs. Julia Volaufova, William Cefalu, Stuart Chalew, Stewart Gordon, and Arlette Soros as well as Brian Bennett at LSU Health Sciences Center; Drs. Eric Ravussin, and Steve Smith at LSU?s Pennington Biomedical Research Center, as well as Dr. Enette Larson-Meyer at the University of Wyoming; Dr. Bradley Newcomer at the University of Alabama at Birmingham; and Dr. Michael Goran at the University of Southern California.

The research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health?s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorders.

Is it ok if we change the sheild abilities to letting things out but not in? It would make their weapons much easier.

Things the Ship can do

has a large canon on the front, a several smaller ones in the back.
also has numerous energy blast towers around the outside of the ship itself.
has a food replicator, just like Star Trek.
has various 'bots' that go around and clean, and can even do simple repairs, but nothing complicated.
the complicated robot is in the Medical Bay, he is an A.I unit, or something very close to it. He is sarcastic and a bit of a nag, but he does the job well, equipped with knowledge from all three empires, he has the tool to even do complicated surgery. He cannot leave the Medical Bay.
In the Hnagers are several 'training Mechs', they are sturdy and designed for safety while learning how to work a Mech. Their systems are standard and simple, and have no weapons. We could probably use them for spare parts. They are standard size too.

Stock futures dip after jobless claims data (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stock index futures pointed to a flat open on Thursday as investors found little reason to buy after three days of gains on the S&P 500 and a weaker report on jobless claims.

Nasdaq futures were pressured as Apple Inc (AAPL.O) fell 2.7 percent to $366.15 in premarket trading. Co-founder Steve Jobs resigned as chief executive of the iPhone and iPad maker, which briefly became the largest S&P 500 component by market capitalization last month.

Jobs, who has fought and survived a rare form of pancreatic cancer, said he could no longer perform the duties of the job. Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook takes over as CEO.

"The resignation won't impact the dynamics of the company, but it will have an impact on the investor psyche when it comes to the stock," said Rick Fier, vice president at Conifer Securities in New York, which has about $7 billion in assets under administration. "It becomes a 'show me' stock now, though the decline today creates a good entry point for buying."

Jobless claims rose more than forecast in the latest week, lifted by striking Verizon Communications (VZ.N) workers, a government report showed.

S&P 500 futures dipped 0.4 point but were below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures added 11 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures fell 6.75 points.

The labor report was one of the final pieces of data before a keenly awaited speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, who many investors hope will offers hints of new stimulus to aid the struggling economy.

Some have said recent discouraging data increased the odds of such a plan, but more gradual measures are considered the most likely outcome of the speech during the central bank's annual symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

"Unemployment is still weaker than anyone would like ... (but) this shouldn't have too big of an impact on Bernanke tomorrow," said Mitch Rubin, chief investment officer at RiverPark Advisors in New York.

"People will be marginally disappointed" if no big plan is offered, he added, "but who can say what the impact will be after such a weak month?"

Wall Street has been marked by steep volatility in recent weeks on concerns about the global economy and sovereign debt woes in Europe. The CBOE Volatility index (.VIX) is up 42 percent so far in August, while the S&P has fallen 8.9 percent.

Credit Suisse Global Equity Strategist Andrew Garthwaite cut his S&P year-end target to 1,220 from 1,350.

Banks have born the brunt of the volatility, and the sector is likely to remain in focus Thursday. Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) rose 1.4 percent to $7.09 before the bell, extending a rally from the previous session. The stock remains 28 percent lower for the month and hit a 2-1/2-year low earlier this week.

Both discount chain Big Lots Inc's (BIG.N) and Hormel Foods Corp (HRL.N) reported quarterly profits that beat estimates and raised their full-year outlooks.

U.S. stocks rallied for a second day Wednesday as investors bought beaten-down financial shares and unloaded gold.

Be Prepared for Natural Disaster! | FIRST 6 MONTHS WITH YOUR PET

Whenever natural disaster warnings go out, pet owners begin to scramble.? Here is a list of items and actions you should take to make sure you are prepared should the big bad wolf ?Huff and Puff? and try to blow your house down!

Understand the possibilities of Natural Disasters.

Recognize the different types of natural and man-made disasters that can occur in your area and know how to effectively plan for them.

Research animal-friendly places.

Many pet owners complain they were turned away from evacuation shelters because they brought pets. Call your local and county officials and find out where you can take your pet before the natural disaster hits.? Your veterinarian or boarding facility may also take in pets during severe weather.

Find out your options and make plans for your pet well in advance.

Get Your Pet Identified

Make sure your pet wears current identification at all times that includes his name, rabies tag and your cell phone number since you will not be at home.? If you are in a hurricane, tornado zone, etc. having your pet micro-chipped is a must.? Microchips are often the only means to positively identify lost pets after a natural disaster.? Each year, thousands of pets are never returned to their owners because owners are unable to positively identify their pets and prove ownership.? So many pets find their way home after being separated for months after a natural disaster!!

If you don?t have an ID tag, write your information in indelible ink on the collar and carrier.?? If possible, include a contact not traveling with you in a safe area.

Have a pet carrier.

One of the most important pieces of pet-equipment you can have during a natural disaster or an evacuation is a pet carrier.? This is especially vital when transporting small dogs and cats.? Pet carriers are often required at shelters and can serve as a safe space for your scared pet.? Be sure to label your carrier with your pet?s name, breed, sex, date of birth, your current address and cell phone numbers and any important medical information.

Have a properly-sized pet carrier for each pet.? Carriers should be large enough for the pet to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably.

Make sure you have at least two weeks of your pet?s medications on hand.

After some severe natural disasters, many homeowners aren?t allowed to return home for a week or more.? In the unlikely event a natural disaster strikes your area, make sure you have more than just a few days? worth of your pet?s medications.? Make sure you have at least 14 days of prescription medications, heartworm and flea preventives,etc.? Pack them in a bag with your pet?s essentials and write down your current administration schedule in case you must leave your pet at a kennel or other facility.? Even if it?s not time, you should apply heartworm and flea preventive prior to putting your pet in an evacuation facility. Your pet could get exposed to fleas and mosquitoes and the extra protection will only help.

Carry a week?s worth of food and water.

If possible, divide your pet?s meals into individual storage bins or bags. This will ensure you bring enough food and assist others who may have to care for your pet during an evacuation following a natural disaster.

Carry bottled water (figure 24 ounces per day for a 20-pound dog and 8 ounces per day for a 10-pound cat) and bowls.? Many shelters will not have adequate food and water for pets.

Bring at least two slip leashes.

I recommend you have the simple slip-type webbing or nylon leashes with you at all times. A frightened dog can slip out of a collar while a slip leash can hold them securely.? A slip leash can also be used to restrain a cat in a pinch.? Carry an extra leash in your pocket in case someone else needs it or you lose yours.? Remember, not everyone will be prepared for a natural disaster like you are.

Bring a printed copy of your pet?s vaccine and pertinent medical history.

Contact your veterinarian a couple of day?s before a storm approaches to obtain any needed forms.? This serves as a reminder to keep a medical folder for your pets that contains their latest physical exam reports, blood tests and proof of vaccines or licenses. If you wait until a natural disaster is imminent, your veterinarian may not be able to provide you with these documents.? If your pet has a serious medical condition, make sure you fully understand the diagnosis, most recent diagnostic test results, treatment and prognosis.? In case of an emergency, quick access to this information can save your pet?s life.

Take a photo of your pet before you leave your home.

A current photograph on a cell phone can be the difference between lost and found in the event you become separated during a natural disaster.

Prepare for anxiety.

Natural disasters can last for many hours. Even the most storm-hardened pet can crack after numerous hours of howling wind, changes in barometric pressure and being confined in a carrier.? You should carry anxiety wraps (check out the Thundershirt to the right of this post), calming herbal remedies and prescription medications if you suspect your pet needs it.? Talk to your veterinarian a few days beforehand to stock up on aides for your pet?s anxiety.

Litter, piddle pads and trash bags.

I can?t tell you how often even the most prepared pet owner forgets this one vital necessity.? Bring a small baking pan and litter for cats, piddle pads, newspapers, towels and trash bags for dogs ? plenty of them.

Shampoo, brushes and towels.

If you?re evacuated during a natural disaster, things can get messy. Be prepared by stashing a small bottle of shampoo and a brush in your pet?s emergency kit.

Pack plenty of patience during a natural disaster.?????

Keep in mind that everyone is just as stressed nervous and worried as you are. Be courteous, understanding and helpful. I?ve had pet owners make unreasonable demands (imagine being asked if we had time to bathe and groom a pet during a Category 3 hurricane!), and be downright rude to the staff members that were taking time from their homes and families to care for pets during a crisis. If everyone remains calm, stays focused and slows down, everything will go that much more smoothly.

No one plans on a major storm disrupting their lives. What you can prepare for is how you?ll respond when the natural disaster watches and warnings are announced. Good luck, be safe, and may we all be organized and ready.

Arrest warrants issued for LSU players over fight

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) ? Police obtained arrest warrants Friday for LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson and a teammate, Joshua Johns, on charges of second-degree battery for a bar fight that injured four people last week, and the players have been suspended indefinitely by the school.

Baton Rouge police Sgt. Don Stone said investigators have contacted the players' attorney, Nathan Fisher, and LSU coach Les Miles, and asked for the players to turn themselves in.

Jefferson and Johns, a linebacker, face felony charges for their alleged roles in a fight outside Shady's bar in Baton Rouge on Aug. 19.

"We will continue to cooperate with the authorities in an effort to find out exactly what took place during the incident," Miles said. "As sad as this incident is, it's important that we learn from this and that we take away a valuable lesson. This has weighed on all of us. It's time for us to come together as a team and focus on what we are here to do."

A police report says a 19-year-old woman named Victoria Long said she witnessed several LSU players beating one of the alleged victims and saw Jefferson kick that man in the face.

Four people were treated and released at a hospital in the hours after the fight, and police have said one person had three fractured vertebrae, injuries serious enough to warrant felony charges.

Two witnesses who work at the bar told The Associated Press that the players did not throw the first punch, but added that once the melee began, it was difficult to see who hit whom, and could not verify the extent to which Jefferson and Johns were involved.

Shady's door manager Jordan Neldare, who said he witnessed the fight, said he noticed that Jefferson removed himself from the brawl before it was over, and was standing alone near the bar's entrance, looking upset.

Police have identified Jefferson, Johns, offensive lineman Chris Davenport, and receiver Jarvis Landry as people of interest in the fight.

The four players, who each were interviewed by investigators Tuesday, have hired defense attorney Nathan Fisher, who did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment on the arrest warrants.

On Wednesday, police executed a search warrant of Jefferson's apartment and took 49 pairs of shoes, along with a DNA swab.

Under team orders, LSU players have not discussed the fight publicly since it happened.

Fourth-ranked LSU opens its season Sept. 3 against No. 3 Oregon in Dallas. Although Johns is a reserve, Jefferson was expected to start.

Now fellow senior Jarrett Lee is the likely starter, with sophomore Zach Mettenberger, a junior college transfer, next in line.

Jefferson, a senior, guided LSU to an 11-2 record last season. He is 20-7 as a starter, but the team ranked last in passing in the Southeastern Conference last season, with 155.6 yards per game.

Still, LSU has numerous key players returning and was expected to compete for Southeastern Conference and national championships this season.

The team's success now will ride on how the players are able to regroup from a series of setbacks this offseason, one of which occurred Thursday when LSU suspended starting wide receiver Russell Shepard for violating school and NCAA codes that pertain to discussing NCAA inquiries with teammates who are also scheduled to be interviewed on the same matter.

LSU plans to apply for Shepard's reinstatement, but it is unclear how long that will take. The receiver will miss at least the opener and possibly more games.

Shepard had been interviewed about the NCAA's ongoing investigation into the relationship that scouting services provider and purported street agent Willie Lyles has had with a number of college football programs, including both LSU and Oregon.

Earlier this summer, Steve Kragthorpe, who was hired after last season as the Tigers' new offensive coordinator, announced he had Parkinson's disease. He has remained on staff as quarterbacks coach, but relinquished offensive coordinator duties. Miles has since promoted offensive line coach Greg Studrawa to fill that void.

Earth's meteorites linked to single asteroid

The first dust samples ever retrieved from an asteroid and brought back for study show that a portion of the most common meteorites to hit Earth may have come from a single rocky ancestor out in space, Japanese researchers say.

In a wide-ranging analysis of tiny fragments collected from the asteroid Itokawa during a spacecraft visit in 2005, six studies by several teams of scientists released Thursday by the journal Science piece together a detailed description, and history, of this particular space rock.

The more than 1,500 dust grains gathered by Japan's Hayabusa spacecraft ? which are uncontaminated by our atmosphere, unlike meteorites that fall to Earth ? show that meteorites contain the primitive elements that formed the early solar system.

That knowledge, and study of the grains, will allow scientists to better understand what our part of the Milky Way looked like billions of years ago when the ring of gas and dust surrounding the Sun began to coalesce to form planets, asteroids and comets.

"These dust particles are the building blocks of the planets," said Tomoki Nakamura, a planetary scientist at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan, who is one of the studies' lead authors.

The fact that Hayabusa returned any particles at all is a small miracle in itself. Launched in 2003, the spacecraft was designed to shoot an impactor into the surface of the stony asteroid Itokawa and then scoop up dust kicked up by the collision.

The impactor failed to fire; but the mission scientists got the craft to at least touch the asteroid's surface.

"They didn't know whether they trapped any particles or not," said Alexander Krot, a cosmochemist at the University of Hawaii at Manoa who was not involved in the study. "Before it returned to Earth, they didn't even know whether it was successful."

Navigation issues plagued the mission on its earthbound journey, but when the return capsule landed in South Australia in 2010, researchers were relieved to find enough particles for years of study.

After slicing, scanning and irradiating the particles, scientists have pieced together what happened to Itokawa.

They estimate that the 500-meter-long Itokawa was once perhaps 20 kilometers long but was smashed to bits in earlier times. A study looking at the shapes of the grains found that the asteroid was porous, with about one-third empty space ? which means it was created when those fragments were pulled back by gravity to form a "rubble pile."

Analysis by Nakamura's team showed that the mineral chemistry of Itokawa, which is a silica-rich "S-type" asteroid, matched one particular class of meteorites found on Earth, called low-total-iron, low metal ordinary chondrites.

Another team, peering at thin slices of the particles, explained why the asteroid had not entirely resembled the meteorites when analyzed from a distance: The asteroid had gotten a tan. The whitish iron oxide on its surface had been converted to dark iron through abrasion by tiny micrometeoroids and high-speed particles emanating from the Sun.

For all that Itokawa's dust has revealed, Krot said, scientists are still looking for direct evidence on asteroids of a molecule crucial for life as we know it: water. NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission, which in 2016 will start toward an asteroid that might bear water, could be the key.

Moments like Diamonds: A round of bowling in Tokyo

Well it's my last night here in Tokyo again, its quite sad actually. I mean besides obviously being sad to leave, I am here in the apartment alone while my friend is working. I really wish we could have spent my last day together, but flights during the week were cheaper than the weekend.

I've been meaning to write some more proper posts about Japan, and it seems to write about a fun time I had spending with my friend last year. If we can't hang out today, at least I can reminisce right? ^^

Now really, I don't like bowling that much. It's fun enough, but I am not so great at it. My lowest score was seriously 24 (but that was in high school gym class and I was more interested in messing around and being obnxious with my friends..yeah) anyhow, but bowling is one of the activities you can enjoy with friends here that doesn't involve food or alcohol or singing (but it can of course).

The main difference between bowling in the US and Japan of course is the size of the alley. There are bowling alleys here as big as in the US, but averagely there are fewer lanes. Furthermore I am used to bowling alleys that are attached to bars, restaurants, arcades, have full meal service etc.

But I am not interested in those things, so going for a round at a smaller alley without a bunch of people inhaling pizza and booze was fine for me XD Indeed there were only a couple other people there that evening. The other thing I really liked was the shoes were dispensed from a vending machine!
