First five cities getting Sprint 4G LTE coverage in July

The plight of Karen Klein, the bus monitor in Greece, N.Y. who was shown crying as some middle schoolers taunted her mercilessly, shocked millions of viewers who saw the video after it was posted on YouTube Tuesday, and prompted a Canadian man to turn to the crowdfunding website IndieGoGo.

"As soon as I heard of Karen Huff Klein I had to create a fundraiser here for this nice lady,? Max Sidorov wrote on the fundraising page he set up for Ms. Klein. ?Let?s give Karen a vacation of a lifetime, let?s show her the power of the internets and how kind and generous people can be.?

Mr. Sidorov, who reportedly lives in Ontario, could not be immediately reached for further comment.

The result was an unprecedented deluge of money from people mainly appalled by the students? bullying. As of Friday, the campaign had raised nearly $600,000, and the crush of interest from around the world had slowed down the website to the point that it had appeared the servers had crashed. IndieGoGo says never had one of its causes raised so much money in such a short time.

?The world has never seen such a convergence of social media, communication, transparency, and connection. That?s what crowdfunding is,? says Slava Rubin, a co-founder of the San Francisco-based company. ?What has happened in the 48 hours is absolutely remarkable.?

The concept of crowdfunding is a close cousin to the better-known term crowdsourcing: tapping into a mass of knowledge by using the Internet to find users of, say, Facebook or Yelp or Cats.com. From there, it?s a small evolution to using the Internet to garner money from farflung individuals, something that only really became possible with technology in the late 1990s to facilitate business transactions and to transfer money easily and safely, with websites like PayPal and Amazon and eBay.

In the past half-decade, the idea of using the Internet and crowds of otherwise unconnected people to raise money has steadily gained traction. Musicians, writers, and filmmakers use crowdfunding to persuade people to chip in a few dollars here and there to record albums, write books, or make films. Philanthropists have used the concept to generate interest and funding for orphans in third-world countries. Entrepreneurs have used it to raise money for new devices or video games. One couple used IndieGoGo to raise money for a medical procedure to help them get pregnant.

Former foe of gay marriage in California now favors unions

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A key witness for lawyers seeking to defend California's ban on same-sex marriage in federal court in 2010 has changed his view on the subject, and pronounced his support for giving gay unions social recognition.

David Blankenhorn, founder of the Institute for American Values think tank, wrote in an opinion piece for the New York Times he now believes the time for "denigrating or stigmatizing same-sex relationships is over."

"Whatever one's definition of marriage, legally recognizing gay and lesbian couples and their children is a victory for basic fairness," Blankenhorn wrote in a piece published on Friday.

In 2010, Blankenhorn was the final witness called to defend California's ban on gay marriage, which was passed by voters in the state in 2008 in a ballot measure called Proposition 8. Six states and the District of Columbia now allow same-sex marriage.

Blankenhorn began his testimony by asserting that the best environment for children is to live in a house led by a man and a woman.

But in a surprise to observers of the trial, Blankenhorn seemed to concede certain points to gay marriage advocates under persistent cross-examination from veteran litigator David Boies, who helped launch the legal challenge to Proposition 8.

Blankenhorn said on the witness stand he believed "adopting same-sex marriage would be likely to improve the well-being of gay and lesbian households and their children."

In his New York Times opinion piece, Blankenhorn maintained gay marriage "has become a significant contributor to marriage's continuing deinstitutionalization."

"I have written these things in my book and said them in my testimony, and I believe them today," he wrote in the piece. "I am not recanting any of it."

CHANGE OF HEART

But Blankenhorn went on to argue that he has changed his view due in part to the public's coming to believe gay marriage is about accepting gays and lesbians "as equal citizens."

"And to my deep regret, much of the opposition to gay marriage seems to stem, at least in part, from an underlying anti-gay animus," Blankenhorn wrote. "To me, a Southerner by birth whose formative moral experience was the civil rights movement, this fact is profoundly disturbing."

Chad Griffin, president of the gay advocacy group Human Rights Campaign, applauded Blankenhorn's change of heart.

"His experience wrestling with the issue of marriage equality and coming out on the right side of history will be an inspiration to millions of fair-minded Americans who are in the same place," Griffin said in a statement.

Representatives from the National Organization for Marriage and Focus on the Family, two prominent groups opposed to same-sex marriage, could not be reached for comment.

Officials from the National Organization for Marriage have argued gays and lesbians should not force society to redefine marriage, and that recognizing same-sex weddings could endanger the freedom of expression of places of worship that oppose it.

President Barack Obama last month announced his support for same-sex marriage, after previously voicing his opposition to it during his 2008 campaign for president.

His change of stance on the issue galvanized the gay rights movement, and set Obama on the opposite side of the question from presumed Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who is against same-sex marriage.

In the federal court case in which Blankenhorn testified in 2010, U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker ruled to overturn California's gay marriage ban on the grounds that it violated due process and equal protection under the U.S. Constitution.

The ban remains in place while its supporters appeal Walker's ruling, which this year was upheld by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals but could ultimately be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.

I Devour Books: Interview with Misty Gatlin

Hey everyone, today I would like to welcome Misty Gatlin, author of A Princess Broken! ?Misty was kind enough to answer some?interview?questions I had for her and I hope you guys enjoy it!

?Here is a little bit about Misty:

I am a mother of two beautiful children who is married to my high school sweetheart.? I?m a mother, wife,?teacher,?writer?and speaker.? I love doing what God has gifted me to do.My writing and speaking are both transparent and relevant.? My passion is to equip teen and college age girls with the tools to get through day-to-day life by building confidence in who they are in Christ.? I have worked with these age groups for more than 12 years through teaching and youth ministry.

Would you like to tell the readers a little bit about the book for those who have not read it yet? Book synopsis: Sarah defines herself as many things: broken, damaged, addicted, and hopeless. Hurt at an early age by someone dear to her, she retaliates by living a life filled with destruction. Her past has finally caught up with her, and she's ready to call it quits. Her story unfolds when she meets a compassionate stranger who helps her realize past decisions don?t define who she is, and what she thought was the end of her story is only the beginning. A life-changing decision is placed in front of her, and she's forced to face it head on. What will she choose, and where will that path lead her? So, what inspired you to write A Princess Broken? Honestly, I had a dream one Sunday afternoon about writing what I called a ?blog series.?? Every Tuesday and Thursday I would write around 700 words to the story.? The funny thing is I didn?t know where the story was going.? I literally wrote everything the day I posted it.? I discovered I work better under pressure, and the story was bringing new readers in by the hundreds each week.? Then readers came by the thousands each week, and I knew I had something real with it. I felt like I got to be the first person to read this book, and just as I devour any well written novel, I did the same with this one.? The only difference is I had to write it in order to see what was going to happen.? It was an experience I can?t explain. Are any of the events in the novel inspired by real life events? Somehow this is a difficult one to answer.? Yes and no.? I took snippets from my own life plus issues I see my students dealing with every day and sprinkled in whatever was in my imagination.? There?s nothing in the book that?s straight from real events other than a scene with Kate?s dad.? It was my dad?s story verbatim.? I journaled during that incident with him, and I literally re-wrote the events and feelings in this book.? I never intended for it to be a part of any book, but I felt strongly that it should be told, and it somehow seemed to fit well. Have you ever had a real life encounter with a person like Sarah from the novel? I don?t know that I?ve met someone exactly like her, but I teach at an alternative high school and work with youth at church, so I?ve encountered many girls who have similarities to her.? There?s also a little bit of me in both Kate and Sarah.? The book is very emotional. Were there any parts of the novel that you found difficult to write due to the emotions you had to convey to the reader? Oh, absolutely!? At one point near the end of the book I had to stop writing.? I was crying, and I had to process what I had just written.? I attempted to read that particular part out loud to my husband, and I just couldn?t get through it.? Whether it was a connection I felt with my characters or the fact that I mentally and emotionally placed myself in that situation, I don?t know, but it was definitely something I had never had to do before.? It was at that point I realized the power in this book. So what is your writing process like? Ha ha! I don?t know that I have a writing process.? It?s never the same.? I just get something in my head that won?t leave, and I write it down.? From that a story is created.? With A Princess Broken I just saw it play out in my head like a movie, and I wrote what I saw.? There are scenes with great description where I sat quietly and did what I assume actors do with method acting.? In my mind I was Sarah.? I dug deep and tried to feel what she would have felt during certain moments, and some things came to me in a very real way. There?s one scene in particular that almost sends chills through me when I read it, and you can read it in Friday?s tour stop.? I remember the day I wrote it; I even remember what I was wearing that day.? It was the scene where Sarah remembers the first time she cut herself.? It was almost as if I felt her emotion and pain, and I wrote what I felt.? I?ve had girls come to me after reading it telling me their own experiences were almost exactly what I had described.? The thing is I?ve never experienced that, but I somehow found myself writing as if I had lived it. Some think my mind is a bit crazy, and some think I have an imagination made especially for a writer.? Honestly I don?t care who is right.? It has given me some great stories.? There is no set process, however.? I just write when I can, and I can never force it.? If it?s not there, it?s just not there.? I took a week or two off in writing this book because nothing came to me, and I knew something forced would never turn out as good so I just left it alone, and my readers understood. Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what type? I?m a music lover, so I can?t listen to it while I?m writing because I sing along with it.? If I?m writing for my blog (nonfiction), I might sometimes listen to worship music very quietly in the background.? If I?m writing fiction, though, I need complete silence around me.? Truly, I go to another place while I?m writing, so I have to be alone and with no distractions.? What advice would you give teens going through tough issues in their daily lives? First, understand you?re not alone.? Whatever situation you?ve found yourself in, you are not hopeless.? One thing I do for my students dealing with similar issues is listen to them and love them regardless of what they?ve been struggling with in life.? I will not judge them for doing the things they do, and I will not treat them as if they were bad people.? I don?t believe any of them are bad.? I believe there are many factors that go into making decisions they make, and they need to know there is hope for them.? They can make a change and have a better life. More than anything my advice would be to find someone to talk to.? Going through these issues alone will lead to more hopelessness, and a person?s self-worth plummets during those hopeless times.? There is always someone somewhere ready, willing, and equipped to help.? My advice is to seek them out, and I always offer myself up to anyone needing help.

Crisis-weary investors scoffed Monday at what had appeared to be a hopeful turn in the European debt crisis: a victory for pro-Europe parties in a Greek election. U.S. stocks were little changed, and borrowing costs for Spain surged to alarming levels.

Investors appeared fed up with policy makers' inability to resolve a crisis that has bedeviled markets for more than three years. Leaders of the most developed countries are meeting in Mexico to discuss the crisis and the slowing global economy.

"Even though we avoided the worst-case scenario in Greece, the crisis has entered a new and dangerous phase, and it doesn't end with Greece," said Michelle Gibley, director of international research at the Schwab Center for Financial Research, a division of the Charles Schwab brokerage.

U.S. indexes opened lower then drifted between modest gains and losses. Homebuilders rallied after a measure of confidence among U.S. builders rose to a five-year high.

Spanish borrowing rates spiked Monday above levels that forced other countries to take bailouts, a sign that bond investors fear Spain will default on its debts.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 25.35 points, or 0.2 percent, to 12,741.82. The Nasdaq composite index rose 22.53 points, or 0.8 percent, to 2,895.33. It was lifted by Apple, its biggest component, which rose $11.65, or 2 percent, to $585.78.

Rival tech titan Microsoft will make a "major" announcement after the market closes. Many expect it to introduce a tablet computer that would compete with Apple's market-dominating iPad.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1.94 points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,344.78. Of its 10 major industry categories, only financials and energy stocks fell. Banks would be hit hard if the European crisis spun out of control. Energy companies followed oil prices lower.

On Sunday, Greek voters elected a party that wants to continue a program of international bailout loans that are conditioned on painful budget cuts. Traders had fretted for weeks that a radical leftist party would prevail and reject Europe's unpopular bailout plan.

The next step, traders feared, would be Greece's dropping the shared currency. Anxiety over a Greek exit was so pronounced that many expected bank runs on Monday if political anti-bailout parties had won the election.

Yet Greece's situation remains precarious. The anti-bailout party got a big chunk of the vote. There's also no guarantee that the winners will be able to form a government. Elections a month ago failed to produce a governing coalition, leading to Sunday's do-over.

Many had expected stocks and other risky investments to rally on relief that the conservative party won. But the broader scope of Europe's financial burdens soon overshadowed whatever breathing room the election provided.

Safe investments rose and riskier ones fell as traders continued their long vigil for a more permanent solution in Europe. Leaders there are considering a centralized system of bank regulation and deposit insurance to complement proposals of closer economic coordination.

"It doesn't appear that any lasting solution is a possibility any time soon," Schwab's Gibley said. "Until we get some kind of coming together, volatility is likely to continue."

Attention shifted Monday toward Spain and Italy, both of which will require international help if they can't convince bond investors that their finances are sound. Benchmark stock indexes closed down 3 percent in Spain and 2.8 percent in Italy.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.58 percent from 1.63 percent earlier Monday as demand increased for low-risk investments.

The yield on Spanish 10-year bonds jumped as high as 7.18 percent, the highest since Spain joined the euro. Only a week ago, Europe unveiled a massive bailout of Spain's banks intended to reassure investors about the nation's finances.

Greece, Ireland and Portugal needed bailouts after their borrowing costs rose above 7 percent. It looks like tiny Cyprus will need a bailout as well.

The Greek election "should be seen as a significant net positive for markets, but markets don't always react in a rational manner," said David Kelly, chief global strategist for JPMorgan Funds.

The ISE Homebuilders index rose 34 cents, or 3.5 percent, to $9.98. Lennar, PulteGroup, D.R. Horton, Toll Brothers and Hovnanian Enterprises all rose strongly.

Giant military contractor SAIC fell 38 cents, or 3.1 percent, to $11.86. The Defense Department said Friday that SAIC had lost its biggest contract to Lockheed Martin, a $4.6 billion deal to run the department's global network.

Energy prices, which are sensitive to investors' expectations of future economic growth, fell. Benchmark crude for July delivery slid 76 cents to $83.27 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

New anti-cancer vaccine developed and tested

ScienceDaily (June 9, 2012) ? Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center have developed and tested in mice a synthetic vaccine and found it effective in killing human papillomavirus-derived cancer, a virus linked to cervical cancers among others.

The research was published in a recent issue of Cancer Immunology, Immunotherapy.

"Vaccines for cancer can be good alternatives to conventional therapies that result in serious side-effects and are rarely effective against advanced disease," said Esteban Celis, M.D., Ph.D., senior member and professor in Moffitt's Immunology Program. "The human papillomavirus, or HPV, is known to cause 99 percent of cervical cancers and annually causes more than 250,000 deaths worldwide." In addition, HPV is the causative agent of a large proportion of head and neck and genital cancers.

Although two approved prophylactic vaccines against strains of HPV that cause cervical cancer are now in wide use as a measure to prevent HPV infections, these vaccines cannot be used to treat HPV-induced cancers. Thus, there is a need to develop therapeutic vaccines for HPV-related tumors.

In an effort to find an effective HPV-cancer vaccine that would eliminate existing HPV-induced cancer, Celis and Kelly Barrios-Marrugo, Ph.D., of the University of South Florida College of Medicine's Molecular Medicine program, designed a peptide vaccination strategy called TriVax-HPV.

The TriVax vaccine strategy was designed to generate large numbers of cytotoxic T-cells that would seek out the proteins preferentially expressed in the tumors. The HPV16-E6 and E7 proteins function as oncogenic proteins inducing cancer. Thus, according to Celis and Barrios-Marrugo, a vaccine targeting these viral proteins is an "ideal candidate" to create strong immune responses, with the additional benefit of not generating autoimmune-related pathologies.

When they tested their vaccine in mice with HPV16-induced tumors, they found that TriVax containing a small synthetic fragment (peptide) of the E7 protein "induced tumor clearance in 100 percent of the treated mice" while the unvaccinated mice with HPV-induced tumors had their tumors grow "at a fast rate."

"Although the magnitude of the T-cell responses achieved with TriVax in mice is impressive," Barrios-Marrugo said," we do not know whether similar effects can be accomplished in humans."

Celis and Barrios-Marrugo point out that current therapies for cervical cancer can be devastating, highly toxic and associated with a 10 percent chance of recurrence. Additionally, a significant proportion of women in the Third World will not receive the approved prophylactic vaccine to prevent HPV infection and, thus, will continue at high risk for cervical and other cancers related to HPV.

"We believe that these studies may help to launch more effective and less invasive therapeutic vaccines for HPV-caused malignancies," concluded the authors.

Yum Falls Hard As Global Growth Stocks Suffer Chinese Slowdown

Shares in Yum! Brands fell hard on Friday as investors digest the marked slowdown of the Chinese economy.? The catalyst for Yum?s nose-diving stock action was a monthly report by McDonald?s, where the Golden Arches disclosed sales fell in Asia, in part due to lagging demand in China.? The slowdown, though, is very real, having already expressed itself in Yum?s latest earnings report, as well as in Starbucks?, another company with substantial exposure to China.

While it may appear facetious to question the strength of China?s economy because it will grow only 8% this year (according to the IMF), that slowdown is having a very real impact on companies operating in the world?s second largest economy.

Yum Brands, which derives 40% of its operating profits from China, fell as much as 6.4% in New York on Friday in the aftermath of a sales update from McDonald?s that showed same-store sales for the Golden Arches didn?t just slow in its Asia-Pacific segment in May, they outright declined 1.7% after rising 4.3% a year ago.

The most recent earnings reports from Yum indicate it is also experiencing a similar slowdown. In the fourth quarter of 2011, Yum?s China division posted 21% same-store sales growth, but in the first three months of 2012, same-store sales only grew 14%.

The phenomenon isn?t isolated, though.? Starbucks, another company that has thrived in China, is experiencing a similar trend.? Over the last two quarters, year-over-year same-store sales growth in its China/Asia-Pacific region slowed from 20% in fiscal Q1 to 18% in Q2. ?While the decline is small, it does suggest demand is cooling.

That dynamic extends well beyond consumer discretionary stocks as companies across industries deal with the threat of slower global growth and see it reflected in their share price. Caterpillar, who?s CEO?acknowledged?the slowdown in China, saw its stock surge ?30% through late February to $116.95, but has since surrendered all of that gain and more, trading at $86.47 on Friday, down 4.7% on the year.? Nike, meanwhile is seeing pressure on its margins as Europe and China slow and its inventories become bloated.

With growth stories like Yum and Starbucks failing to maintain their gains, investors could be looking to keep their money at home.? One alternative is to invest in companies with a heavy U.S. exposure, even though the global slowdown appears to be hitting hard in the U.S., as the latest jobs report proved.

Dunkin? Brands, for example, is pushing West in the U.S., growing its brands beyond the North East.? With 95% of their stores East of the Mississippi, Dunkin? has a huge domestic growth opportunity.? The stock performance validates that thesis: while both Starbucks and Yum have fallen hard in May, Dunkin? took off, and is now up more than 30% for the year.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney outraised President Barack Obama in May, the first time the Republican presidential challenger has jumped ahead of Obama and his prodigious fundraising apparatus. The numbers illustrate how Romney and the Republican Party have jelled as a force after a protracted GOP primary.

Romney and his party raised more than $76 million last month, the campaign said Thursday. Obama's campaign reported that it and the Democratic Party raised $60 million for the month.

Obama, forced onto the defensive by lackluster employment numbers, also launched a new television ad Thursday in nine key election-year states targeting Congress and blaming lawmakers for not acting on his jobs proposals. The approach represents an expanded ad focus for Obama, who had been going after Romney.

The fundraising numbers and Obama's new ad signal a new stage in the campaign as a resurgent Romney capitalizes on his emergence as the GOP's standard-bearer and as Obama is forced to confront the political implications of a weak economic recovery.

For Romney, the latest figure represents a significant jump in fundraising. He and the GOP brought in $40 million in April, just short of the $43.6 million the Democratic president and his party raised that month. What's more, Romney is getting a significant boost from Republican-leaning super PACs that have raised far more and spent far more than their Democratic-leaning counterparts.

Romney, stepping up his criticism of Obama, campaigned and was raising money Thursday in Missouri. In a speech at a factory in St. Louis, Romney accused Obama not only of a failure of policy, but of "a moral failure of tragic proportions."

Asked afterward to comment on topping Obama in fundraising, Romney said only: "Long way to go."

Obama was mixing more fundraising with official business Thursday as he wrapped up a two-day West Coast trip that included four fundraisers on Wednesday. He started the day under a sweltering sun in the Los Angeles area at a breakfast fundraiser for about 300 people. Tickets started at $2,500.

The president acknowledged that economic growth and jobs haven't come fast enough. But he said the election also is about future Supreme Court nominations, funding for women's health centers, and tackling the nation's debt and deficit.

"The other side, they're always talking about debt and deficits, which I find interesting because they're always the ones that run up the debt and deficit, saying we don't care about deficits until Democrats get into office," he said.

Obama campaign officials noted that Romney's fundraising surge could be temporary and that it reflects his recently sealed standing as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, which allows him to raise more general election money. It also lets him raise money jointly for his campaign and for the Republican Party. The Obama officials pointed out that Democratic presidential challenger John Kerry briefly experienced a similar surge in fundraising over President George W. Bush in the spring of 2004 after Kerry had locked up the nomination.

"We knew this day would come," said Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt.

Obama has been an active fundraiser and lately has stepped up the number of events he holds with donors. As of Thursday, the president has done 153 fundraisers since filing as a candidate for re-election on April 4, 2011, according to statistics kept by CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller. During same period in the 2004 election cycle, Bush had participated in 79 fundraisers.

In all, Obama and the Democratic National Committee and other state-focused funds have hauled in more than $500 million during the 2012 election campaign, compared to more than $480 million for Romney and the Republican Party.

The Romney campaign reported that the party and the campaign had $107 million cash on hand at the end of May. Obama's campaign did not list its comparable figure on Thursday, but last month it reported $115 million in the bank through the end of April, with the Democratic National Committee listing $24 million in hand.

Obama's new ad does not mention congressional Republicans, but its target is clear. Republicans have proposed their own measures aimed at creating jobs and have blocked several Obama proposals to promote hiring of teachers and police officers, and to increase infrastructure projects. Obama has proposed paying for those measures with tax increases on wealthier taxpayers, an idea Republicans reject.

The ad is airing in the key presidential election states of Colorado, Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The campaign declined to reveal how much it was spending on the ads, saying only that it was a "significant" purchase of air time.

Meet Joggobot, the robot running companion for would-be-fit geeks who can?t get any fellow hackers away from their computer screens long enough to go for a run.

The robot is a quadrotor ? that is a helicopter with four rotors ? that flies a few paces ahead its running companion, keeping the jogger on pace and feeling a little less lonely while working up a sweat.

The flying robot packs a camera and tracking software that it uses to find markers on a specially-designed T-shirt worn by the runner. Once sighted,?the robot can stay within about 10 feet of the shirt?mark.

If the runner ditches into the bushes, or otherwise gets out of sight, the robot drops to the ground.

For now, the robot only works while running in a straight line and has?a battery life of just 20 minutes, not exactly ready for?the loop-like routes most runners take,?nor for?any longer, more fulfilling workouts.

But the technology is good enough for the team at the Exertion Games Lab at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, to do some preliminary analysis that will help design future robot running companions.?

In general, the team found that people enjoy running with a robot as it distracts them from exhaustion and keeps them motivated.?

There were, however, questions about control ? do we want the robots to set the pace like a tough physical trainer, or respond to our needs and desires like a compliant partner??

Probably a bit of both, which ?can be an interesting design challenge,? the team reported in a paper presented at a computer-human interactions conference this May in Austin, Texas.?

Almost certainly it will have features that allow users to control the robot, such as speed up or slow down, based on hand gestures.

Future versions might also have more personality, such as eyes, to enhance user experience.?

?We were surprised at how quickly users attributed social characteristics to Joggobot: they said things such as ?it?s tired now,? when the battery was empty,? the team reported.?
