Italy seeks bigger euro fund after tough debt sale (Reuters)

MILAN/ROME (Reuters) ? Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti sought reinforcement for the euro zone's bailout fund and pledged new efforts to boost the economy after a disappointing bond auction on Thursday underlined the threat to the country's shaky public finances.

Investors demanded a yield of nearly 7 percent on 10-year paper at the auction of medium- and long-term bonds, down from the record highs seen last month but still unsustainable given the 450 billion euros ($580 billion) that Italy needs to raise through debt issuance in 2012.

An unprecedented European Central Bank injection last week of nearly half a trillion euros of cheap funding for banks eased pressure at a short-term Italian debt auction on Wednesday, but longer-dated bonds still pose a challenge.

Monti put a brave face on the auction result, which analysts described as "slightly positive" or "average" at best.

"Auctions held yesterday and today went rather well, this is encouraging but the financial turbulence absolutely isn't over," Monti said during a traditional end-year press conference.

Italy, the euro zone's third largest economy, remains at the centre of the debt crisis that began in Greece two years ago and its borrowing needs could overwhelm the bloc's financial defenses if it were forced to seek an international bailout.

"A lot of work remains to be done but from this point on, this work has to be done in Europe above all," Monti said.

He said the European Financial Stability Facility, the bailout fund set up by euro zone governments, needs "significantly greater" resources but refused to quantify how much more was required.

Monti promised to outline a first package of growth measures to European partners next month and said the emphasis would be on liberalizing the economy, boosting competition and overhauling the jobs market, though he did not give details.

The measures will follow a 33 billion euro package of cuts and tax hikes aimed at balancing the budget by 2013 which was passed by parliament last week but which has been criticized for weighing too heavily on Italy's already sickly growth prospects.

Monti said he was aware that the austerity package had "many disadvantages" but said budget discipline was needed to restore confidence in Italy's public finances. However he added that European policy had to focus increasingly on growth.

"All mechanisms for making the application of this discipline more secure is welcome, provided it is integrated into a comprehensive European economic policy which has more resources to get the euro zone out of its current difficulties and above all promotes growth more," he said.

RECESSION

Italy's chronically weak economy over the past two decades has been one of the main factors in creating a debt burden that now amounts to around 120 percent of gross domestic product, second only to Greece in the euro zone.

Rigid labor rules - which give some workers iron-clad guarantees while forcing increasing numbers of young people to accept short term jobs with few prospects - an inefficient public sector, low productivity and choking red tape have long weighed on the economy.

Italy is widely considered to be heading for a severe recession next year and data on Thursday showed business confidence at its lowest for two years, with orders falling and the production outlook worsening.

Although he offered no firm timetable, Monti said the government would move quickly under pressure both from international partners and the bond markets.

"The timetable will be rapid. We aren't being permitted to work calmly," he said.

Underlining the pressure he faces, yields on 10-year bonds remained locked above 7 percent on the secondary market on Thursday, near the levels which forced Greece, Ireland and Portugal to seek an international bailout.

Italy sold 7 billion euros ($9 billion) of bonds at auction in thin holiday markets, just above the mid-point of its target range, but the yield on benchmark 10 year BTPs was 6.98 percent, not far from a euro lifetime record of 7.56 percent a month ago.

"Buying 10-year Italian bonds is a leap of faith which investors are prepared to take only at very high interest rates," said Nicholas Spiro of Spiro Sovereign Strategy. "There are simply too many risks and uncertainties surrounding Italy."

Its 3-year bonds sold more easily and their yield fell more than two percentage points at auction to 5.62 percent -- far below the euro era record of 7.89 percent that Italy paid to sell the same bond at the end of November. ($1 = 0.7724 euros)

New York Times, Not Hackers, Accidentally Spams Its Readers (Mashable)

Regardless of whether you ever subscribed to home delivery of The New York Times, you may have received an email on Wednesday that offered to give you a deal if you re-subscribe. Although some of the email's more than 8 million recipients and members of the paper's staff have suggested that the email was the result of someone outside of The Times, a spokesperson for The Times said in a statement that it was in fact the result of a simple error.

[More from Mashable: How Many Emails Did You Handle in 2011? This App Knows All]

"An email was sent earlier today from The New York Times in error," the statement said. "This email should have been sent to a very small number of subscribers, but instead was sent to a vast distribution list made up of people who had previously provided their email address to The New York Times."

Earlier on Wednesday, the New York Times twitter account had tweeted, "If you received an email today about canceling your NYT subscription, ignore it. It's not from us."

[More from Mashable: So You Got a Nook Tablet? Tips for New Users]

April, this detail led some to the false conclusion that the email was a result of that security breach.

At the same time, an internal New York Times email said that the address attached to the special offer, nytimes@email.newyorktimes.com, doesn't belong to the newspaper, according to the New York Daily News. It turns out that this wasn't correct, and The Times has apologized for its error in sending the message. Although this is actually a much better scenario, as nobody's email address or other information has been compromised, it's an embarrassing one.

One Twitter user, for instance, has reacted to the incident with a NYT Spam Twitter account that spouts one-liners such as "Yo, does anyone want, like an iPad? Tooth whitening, maybe?"

In little more than an hour of existence, the account has collected followers who are reporters at The Washington Post, Associated Press, and, yes, The New York Times.

Hawaii Civil Union and Marriage Online Application Process Activates on January 1st

The Hawai?i State Department of Health (DOH) today announced the new website addresses to apply online for a civil union or marriage in Hawai?i. The new online process will be activated at 12:00 a.m. (midnight) on January 1, 2012.

Click for more information about Civil Unions in Hawaii

To apply online for a civil union go to: https://civilunion.ehawaii.gov

To apply online for marriage go to: https://marriage.ehawaii.gov

Dr. Alvin Onaka, DOH state registrar, said, ?Even though our Kinau Hale office will be closed for the New Year holiday, the public will be able to use our new on-line system developed in partnership with ehawaii.gov. Couples who use the online system will benefit from a more convenient, accurate and efficient process that will provide access to an electronic certificate within days.?

With the assistance of community groups, the Civil Union Task Force, marriage agents and performers, legislators, the Hawai?i Tourism Authority, and the Attorney General?s Office, the DOH has worked to create a statewide system to better serve the needs of our island state where as many as 30,000 marriages have taken place in a given year.

The new online system will accommodate anywhere from one to 1,000 applicants at any time.

For more information on applying for a civil union or marriage license go to: www.hawaii.gov/doh

The online application system was developed and is maintained via the eHawaii.gov program, a largely self-funded public-private partnership between the State of Hawai?i and Hawai?i Civil Union and Marriage Information Consortium LLC, a Hawai?i corporation and wholly owned subsidiary of eGovernment firm NIC Inc. (NASDAQ: EGOV).

The eHawaii.gov partnership has allowed Hawai?i to deploy award-winning applications such as: Hawai?i Electronic Death Registration System, Hawai?i Electronic Bench Warrants, Statewide Camping Permits, Hawaii Business Express and Online Motor Vehicle Renewals. Hawai?i Information Consortium works with Hawai?i state and county government agencies to enable them to conduct state business online and improve public access to government information.

The DOH monitors health status to identify community health problems and trends. An important part of this work is done by collecting, compiling, and analyzing records of vital events that include all births, deaths, marriages and now civil unions that take place within our state.

Rick Santorum is in third place in Iowa, new CNN poll says (The Ticket)

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- After spending a majority of the campaign season at the bottom of the polls, Rick Santorum is seeing a last-minute rise in Iowa just days before the Republican caucuses, according to a CNN survey released Wednesday.

The poll of registered Republicans in Iowa shows Mitt Romney leading with 25 percent, Ron Paul in second with 22 percent and Santorum in third with 16 percent, his largest showing yet. Newt Gingrich, who led in the state just a few weeks ago, was fourth with 14 percent. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

When asked about the new poll numbers during a campaign stop at a furniture store here on Wednesday afternoon, Santorum said he had heard of them yet.

"I feel very, very good about how things are going and it's nice to see that reflected in some of the polls, but we have a lot of work to do. A lot of work," he said when a reporter informed him of his new standing in the state.

Keating Holland, the polling director for CNN, says most of Santorum's support comes from religious conservatives:

"Most of Santorum's gains have come among likely caucus participants who are born-again or evangelical, and he now tops the list among that crucial voting bloc, with support from 22 percent of born-agains compared to 18 percent for Paul, 16 percent for Romney, and 14 percent for Gingrich."

Facebook Christmas Theme Not so Jolly

Advertisements for a cool Facebook Christmas theme turn out to be a malicious plot set up by hackers to infect as many computers as they can.

Even though Christmas passed, some people want to remain in the holiday spirit for a little longer and cybercrooks are relying on this. Trend Micro experts warn that a fake ?Christmas Theme For Free!! Limited Time? offer started popping up on Facebook walls, leading unsuspecting social network members to a Trojan that takes over the web browsers on the plagued machine.

After the link from the posts is clicked, the unsuspecting user is taken to a page that requires him to install a browser plug-in for the theme to work.

The plug-in called Free Cheesecake Factory Coupons floods the affected user?s wall with a status that continually advertises the scheme.

?Get Christmas Theme for FB on ? ? >>0< < ? ? free Christmas Theme for all FB users!!. Just Install this amazing new fb Christmas new look and change your profile looks show it to your friends?? [Name of tagged friends],? reads the malicious status message.

Identified as TROJ_REDIR.CU, the Trojan that hides behind the browser extension is not destructive, its main purpose being to redirect victims to certain sites.

Individuals who have already fallen for the scam are advised to check their browser?s extensions page and remove the Free Cheesecake Factory Coupons plug-in or any other suspicious looking element.

Also, since the piece of malware may redirect to other nasty locations which seamlessly serve other malicious files, those who?ve encountered this Facebook theme are recommended to run a full system scan with an updated antivirus solution to make sure nothing remains hidden on the infected computer.

During the holiday season, the number of similar plots is expected to rise and that?s why you should be on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary, especially if something pricy or cool is advertised.

(AP) ? Watch the political advertising and Elizabeth Warren, the leading Democratic Senate candidate in Massachusetts, either "sides with extreme left" protesters or has a history of being too cozy with Wall Street. Or Republican freshman Sen. Scott Brown, whom she hopes to defeat next year, is portrayed as an enemy of the environment.

Outside groups on both sides are spending millions of dollars on the race, highlighting the national prominence of the fight over the seat held for nearly 50 years by the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. But the level of spending also foreshadows the role that such groups, including special political action committees, will play in many of next fall's big political matchups.

The flood of money and ads from outside the state is expected to surge as the Warren-Brown race intensifies.

"Massachusetts is at the end of the spear of what will be the big trend and the big story of 2012," said Ken Goldstein, president of Campaign Media Analysis Group, which tracks spending on political ads.

Super PACs have been showing their strength in marquis Senate races. The Supreme Court, in a trio of decisions capped by the landmark Citizens United case in 2010, eased restrictions on the use of corporate money in political campaigns and paved the way for such spending. Massachusetts is front and center, with the conservative Crossroads GPS spending $1.1 million on one spot casting Warren as aligned with radical elements of the Occupy Wall Street movement and another that has her siding with Wall Street bankers.

Crossroads GPS is an affiliate of American Crossroads, a group with ties to Karl Rove, a top political adviser to President George W. Bush. The groups spent more than $38 million to defeat Democrats in the 2010 midterms, raising money from large donors, including many whose identities remain unknown.

Crossroads GPS was by far the largest and most influential super PAC in that campaign year.

Last month, one Crossroads ad used spliced images of Warren with rowdy Occupy Wall Street protesters to claim that she "sides with extreme left" protesters who "attack police, do drugs and trash public parks."

Warren at one point said her philosophies provided the intellectual underpinnings for the Occupy movement, but she has backed off a bit, saying she supports the movement but that the protesters must follow the law.

A second Crossroads ad then painted Warren as being too cozy with Wall Street when she headed a congressional panel that oversaw the Treasury's handling of the $700 billion financial industry bailout, a charge Warren has dismissed as ridiculous given her background as a consumer advocate and leading critic of many Wall Street's practices.

The attacks prompted Warren to spend about $1 million on her first TV campaign ad, in which she says: "Before you hear a bunch of ridiculous attack ads, I want to tell you who I am."

Warren is an especially inviting target for Republicans because many voters don't know much about her, which Anthony Corrado, a campaign finance expert at Colby College in Maine, said explains why these groups have become active at such an early stage of the campaign.

"The first information can often have a powerful influence," he said.

Outside groups have also gone after Brown.

The League of Conservation Voters and the League of Women Voters have spent nearly $3 million on separate ad campaigns accusing Brown of casting anti-environmental votes. Both groups have also run ads against Democrats in other states.

The League of Women Voters' ad rapped Brown for voting with other Senate Republicans to ban the Environmental Protection Agency from controlling gases blamed for global warming. It showed a child breathing through an oxygen mask and urged Brown to "protect the people and not the polluters." Brown complained that the ad was "political demagoguery."

One spot by the League of Conservation Voters slammed Brown for siding with "big oil" and voting "repeatedly against protecting our environment and public health." He has denounced that ad as a distortion.

The League of Conservation Voters said Brown scored a zero on the group's national environmental report card.

The early wave of attack ads has hurt both candidates, a recent University of Massachusetts-Lowell/Boston Herald poll found. The percentage of voters who said they had an unfavorable view of Brown rose from 29 percent to 35 percent between late September and early December. Those viewing Warren unfavorably increased from 18 percent to 27 percent.

Brown wants third-party groups to pull their negative commercials. Warren draws the line at unfair attack ads but defends the rights of political action committees and other independent groups to run ads.

Such talk won't stop outside groups from swarming the airwaves with negative ads, however.

"This is just a harbinger of things to come," said Corrado.

Rapture Or Not, Promise To Care For Pets Stands | KOSU Radio

Filed by KOSU News in Business.
December 24, 2011

Back in May, followers of Harold Camping were preparing for the coming rapture. For some, that preparation included someone to look after their pets.

At the time, animal lover Bart Centre, the creator of Eternal Earth-Bound Pets, had 259 clients whose pets he promised to look after in the event that they were raptured in the next 10 years. Those clients paid $135 for the first pet and $20 for each additional pet.

Clearly, the rapture didn?t happen as predicted on May 21. Centre tells weekends on All Things Considered host Guy Raz that, with the exception of a few demands for refunds, there wasn?t a lot of fallout from the religious event, or nonevent, rather.

?I had to disappoint them and let them know we don?t do refunds,? Centre says.

There might not have been much fallout to Centre?s business from the rapture not happening, but there was some fallout, in the form of complaints, when NPR first told Centre?s story. Many criticized him and said that he was taking advantage of people, but Centre says that?s not the case.

?I do not advertise my business. My business is advertised by the media and by word of mouth,? Centre says. ?I don?t threaten people with the rapture coming; I outright tell them I do not believe in the rapture.?

Centre says that does not negate the possibility that they could be right and he could be wrong, so he?s offering a service to people who love their pets and believe the rapture is going to happen.

?I?m not in a position to say to them, ?It?s not going to happen and you?re foolish,?? he says. ?If this is what they believe, then I will give them piece of mind.?

Centre says business has been a little slow and he?s added only a few clients since May. But he expects that around October 2012, close to when the Mayan calendar ends and what many people believe signifies the coming rapture, business might just pick up again. The Palestine they don?t want you to see

Israel and the American media want you to believe that Palestinians are fanatics; existing only for Israel?s destruction. They want you to believe Palestinians hate Jews and Christians and all other ?infidels?, that they?re all strapped around in bombs, wearing suicide costumes, ready to die. The Republican frontrunner Newt Gingrich even openly said that Palestinians are ?terrorists?.

This is the Palestine they don?t want you to see, that they never show you. Low in the south in the summer sky shines the constellation Scorpius and the bright, red supergiant star Antares. Many of the brightest stars in Scorpius, and hundreds of its fainter stars, are among the youngest stars found near the earth, and a new analysis of them may result in a rethinking of both their ages and the ages of other groups of stars.

New research by astrophysicists from the University of Rochester focused on stars in the north part of the constellation, known as Upper Scorpius, which is a part of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association, one of our best studied groups of young stars and a benchmark sample for investigating the early lives of stars and the evolution of their planet-spawning disks. The Upper Scorpius stellar group lies roughly 470 light years from Earth.

While those stars have been thought to be just five million years old, the team concludes that those stars are actually more than twice as old, at 11 million years of age. The findings are surprising given Upper Scorpius's status as one of the best-studied samples of young stars in the sky.

The findings by graduate student Mark Pecaut and Assistant Professor Eric Mamajek of Rochester, and Assistant Professor Eric Bubar of Marymount University, were accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal.

The scientists came to their conclusions after analyzing hundreds of optical spectra measured with the SMARTS 1.5-meter telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) in Chile, as well as reanalyzing previously published data on the stars.

"We combined our new estimates for the temperatures of the stars based on our spectra, with data on the brightnesses and distances to estimate accurate luminosities," said Pecaut. "Then we used state-of-the-art stellar evolution models to determine the ages."

While similar methods were used in the past to calculate ages for some of the Upper Scorpius stars, Pecaut says no previous study has determined independent age estimates for members of the group over such a wide range of stellar masses. The new analysis shows that stars over a wide range of masses in Upper Scorpius ? from slightly more massive than our Sun, up to the mass of the bright star Antares (17 times the mass of our Sun) are giving ages consistent with a mean age of 11 million years.

"For one thing, the distances to the stars are now much more accurately known," said Pecaut. "Also, the newer computer models take into account the rotation of the stars and its effect on the mixing on the star's hydrogen ? its nuclear fuel source."

"The first criticism that we heard of the work was that our age estimates for the stars more massive than the Sun in Upper Scorpius disagreed drastically with previously published ages for the smaller stars in the group," said Mamajek. "However, we think the stellar parameters and models are on much firmer footing for the higher mass stars than for the lowest mass stars. The computer models of stars have trouble predicting the correct masses of low-mass stars when they are dynamically measureable, as well as the rate at which the low-mass stars consume their lithium through nuclear reactions. The situation is better for the high mass stars. So there is no reason to think that the ages for the smaller stars would be more accurate."

The results from Rochester have immediate implications for one recent discovery. In 2008, Canadian astronomers reported the discovery of the first imaged exoplanet orbiting a young Sun-like star ?identified as 1RXS J160929.1-210524b. The object and its host star are members of the Upper Scorpius group. If the age of the star is much older than first thought, then the "exoplanet" has been cooling off for a longer period of time and consequently has a greater mass. In this case, the predicted mass of the object goes from roughly 8 Jupiter masses to 14 Jupiter masses. Consequently, the object would not be considered an exoplanet by the discoverer's original definition, but a brown dwarf ? a so-called "failed star." However there is considerable uncertainty about the origins of the low-mass companions discovered circling some stars on wide orbits at hundreds of astronomical units, so the jury is still out on the nature of objects like 1RXS J1609b.

Pecaut says with more accurate estimates of the ages of stars, scientists can better understand how long it takes planets to form. For example, if 11-million-year-old stars do not have gas accreting around them, it means that gas-rich planets like Jupiter and Saturn would have to form in less than 11 million years.

Pecaut expects that the findings of the Rochester team will encourage scientists to reassess the ages of other star clusters. If it's determined that other stellar populations are systematically older than originally believed, then it may mean that the conditions for forming gas giant planets like Jupiter around young stars may typically persist for millions of years longer than previously thought.

"If a stellar group as well-studied as Upper Scorpius can be twice as old as previously believed, then all bets are off on the accuracy of the previously published ages for other similar groups of young stars," added Mamajek.
