On SSON: Vested-A Business Model for the 21st Century

From my latest article on the Shared Services & Outsourcing Network:

In my last article I talked about the ailments and perverse incentives that can disrupt or destroy an outsourcing deal. I also briefly introduced our research at the University of Tennessee developed into a concept we have coined ?Vested Outsourcing.? This article focuses on defining the Vested Outsourcing model.

Just what is Vested Outsourcing? ?Vested Outsourcing is first and foremost a mind-set change in which participants approach outsourcing differently in order to craft relationships that move beyond ?butts in seats? transaction-based approaches to an environment where the provider has ?skin in the game? and is responsible for driving results and real value for the buying company?

Pa. monsignor apologizes in clergy-abuse case

(AP) ? A Roman Catholic church official has apologized to a priest sex-abuse victim on the final day of testimony in his child-endangerment trial.

Jurors in Philadelphia are set to hear closing arguments Thursday after the defense rested Tuesday.

Monsignor William Lynn and the Rev. James Brennan have been on trial for 10 weeks.

Lynn is the first U.S. church official charged over his handling of priest-abuse complaints.

Brennan is charged with sexually assaulting a teen in 1999. Defrocked priest Edward Avery is in prison after pleading guilty to sexual assault.

Lynn has testified that he tried to get accused priests away from children, but had limited power as secretary for clergy at the Philadelphia archdiocese.

He says he couldn't do enough to prevent Avery's crime, and says he's sorry for that.

Radioactive Bluefin Tuna: Japan Nuclear Plant Contaminated Fish Found Off California Coast

LOS ANGELES -- Across the vast Pacific, the mighty bluefin tuna carried radioactive contamination that leaked from Japan's crippled nuclear plant to the shores of the United States 6,000 miles away ? the first time a huge migrating fish has been shown to carry radioactivity such a distance.

"We were frankly kind of startled," said Nicholas Fisher, one of the researchers reporting the findings online Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The levels of radioactive cesium were 10 times higher than the amount measured in tuna off the California coast in previous years. But even so, that's still far below safe-to-eat limits set by the U.S. and Japanese governments.

Previously, smaller fish and plankton were found with elevated levels of radiation in Japanese waters after a magnitude-9 earthquake in March 2011 triggered a tsunami that badly damaged the Fukushima Dai-ichi reactors.

But scientists did not expect the nuclear fallout to linger in huge fish that sail the world because such fish can metabolize and shed radioactive substances.

One of the largest and speediest fish, Pacific bluefin tuna can grow to 10 feet and weigh more than 1,000 pounds. They spawn off the Japan coast and swim east at breakneck speed to school in waters off California and the tip of Baja California, Mexico.

Five months after the Fukushima disaster, Fisher of Stony Brook University in New York and a team decided to test Pacific bluefin that were caught off the coast of San Diego. To their surprise, tissue samples from all 15 tuna captured contained levels of two radioactive substances ? ceisum-134 and cesium-137 ? that were higher than in previous catches.

To rule out the possibility that the radiation was carried by ocean currents or deposited in the sea through the atmosphere, the team also analyzed yellowfin tuna, found in the eastern Pacific, and bluefin that migrated to Southern California before the nuclear crisis. They found no trace of cesium-134 and only background levels of cesium-137 left over from nuclear weapons testing in the 1960s.

The results "are unequivocal. Fukushima was the source," said Ken Buesseler of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, who had no role in the research.

Bluefin tuna absorbed radioactive cesium from swimming in contaminated waters and feeding on contaminated prey such as krill and squid, the scientists said. As the predators made the journey east, they shed some of the radiation through metabolism and as they grew larger. Even so, they weren't able to completely flush out all the contamination from their system.

"That's a big ocean. To swim across it and still retain these radionuclides is pretty amazing," Fisher said.

Pacific bluefin tuna are prized in Japan where a thin slice of the tender red meat prepared as sushi can fetch $24 per piece at top Tokyo restaurants. Japanese consume 80 percent of the world's Pacific and Atlantic bluefin tuna.

The real test of how radioactivity affects tuna populations comes this summer when researchers planned to repeat the study with a larger number of samples. Bluefin tuna that journeyed last year were exposed to radiation for about a month. The upcoming travelers have been swimming in radioactive waters for a longer period. How this will affect concentrations of contamination remains to be seen.

Now that scientists know that bluefin tuna can transport radiation, they also want to track the movements of other migratory species including sea turtles, sharks and seabirds.

The Variable Consequences of Debunking Family Myths ? The ...

I received this ferrotype when my maternal grandmother died. She always said it was of her grandparents, who had passed away before she was born. The stories she heard about them from relatives were thus linked in her mind with these images.

However, as my older brother began investigating our genealogy, the family story about this picture didn?t add up. The ferrotype technology was out of fashion in the era it was supposedly taken and the military uniform is of a Pennsylvania regiment in which my great-great-grandfather did not serve. Further spadework proved that the image is in fact a generation further back in our family tree than our grandmother knew. When she visualized her grandparents she was in fact relying on a picture of her great-grandparents.

I doubt it would have bothered her much to learn the truth. She?d have felt silly for a few minutes but then let it go. After all, she didn?t know them personally so it just isn?t that big of a deal.

The debunking of family myths is not always so benign. I had a colleague whose faith in his own family and in people in general was shattered when he learned that the woman he thought was his mother was in fact his maternal grandmother, the woman he grew up thinking was his older sister was in fact his mother and his ?uncle? on the other side was in fact his grandfather. The family had created a network of lies to cover up two scandals (an out of wedlock teen pregnancy and a military desertion). They fooled everyone for decades. Once my colleague found out the truth from his dying mother, he could never forget nor forgive the deceptions. He himself died, in his 80s, still bitter about the myths of his childhood.

In a less serious but still painful case, two women on Antiques Roadshow brought in for appraisal a violin that had been in their family for many years. The family story was that it was a Stradivarius, which the master craftsman had produced in honour of his beautiful new wife Faciebat Ano (Her name was even on the violin!). When the appraiser revealed that Faciebat Ano means ?Made in the Year? and the instrument was a cheap reproduction, their disappointment in the destruction of their family myth must have been accentuated by the humiliation of looking ignorant on national television.

My favorite family myth story concerned two women from Manchester. One of them in late life began digging into her family?s history and found that she had a distant cousin who was probably still living. She tried to track the cousin?s whereabouts and found that she resided only a few miles away! She introduced herself and the cousin was delighted. They found they had similar tastes and similar ideas and why shouldn?t they? They were family after all. Even their husbands got on well, to the point that the four of them dined and played bridge together regularly.

But then the woman who had originally discovered the connection realized that she had misunderstood a baptism certificate of an ancestor. When she corrected the resulting cascade of misinterpretations within her family tree, she realised that her ?distant cousin? wasn?t related to her at all. The friendship, despite being based on a fairy tale, endured. This makes me wonder: If everyone were deluded into believing that some proportion of total strangers were in fact long lost relatives, would we all be blessed with a larger circle of friends?

Travel Agencies In Vietnam

Visiting Vietnam with a travel agency is a good idea. A travel professional can give you a valuable advice on what cities to visit, what monuments to see, what travel guides are the best to accompany you.

Vietnam is considered one of the most popular destinations in the south-east of Asia. Hanoi, the capital of the country, is an ancient city, the political, economic and cultural center. The city began its rapid development in the 11th century, when the Emperor Wan Li Kong, moved his capital to the citadel of Thang-Long. Today it is one of the most interesting cities in Asia, with its wide avenues and European-style skyscrapers, numerous lakes, parks and fountains interspersed with hundreds of colonial houses and pagodas.

Downtown areas of the city have been turned into a huge shopping district. The capital is literally full of historical landmarks, including the Temple of the White Horse, the Flag Tower, the largest lake in the capital, Ho Tay, with many buildings of the era of emperors on its shores. The Temple of the Rising Sun and The Forbidden City are perhaps the two most romantic places adored by tourists. The remains of the ancient defense system of the capital, and the complex of monuments of An-Duong Vuong will please the admirers of historical sights. The Cathedral of St. Joseph, Kwan-Su Pagoda, as well as numerous bridges are some of other popular places.

The monuments of later periods include the Temple of Literature, the Presidential Palace, the Mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, and a network of tunnels used during the Vietnam War as a shelter from air raids. Very original and numerous are the museums of Hanoi, such as the Museum of Fine Arts, the Ethnographic Museum, the Museum of Folk Architecture, and the Army Museum. It is worth visiting the Municipal Puppet Theater on Lake Hoan-Kem and the Hanoi Municipal Theatre. In January, one can witness the famous festival of spring flowers.

Halong Bay is famous as 'the place where the dragon descended into the sea'. Perhaps it is the most important and beautiful sight of the country listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is an amazing complex of 3,000 tiny rocky islands that are picturesquely scattered in the sea and surrounded by tiny beaches and quaint caves and grottoes. Of special interest is Vandong, an ancient trading port in South-East Asia, as well as numerous historical sites scattered throughout the bay.

Hue is the capital of the last emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty. It is one of the cultural, religious and educational centers in Vietnam, as well as one of the most interesting cities in the country. Here are restored imperial palaces, the walls of the citadel Kinh Thanh, the palace of Thai Hoa, the Museum of Emperor Bao-Tung Wat Ku with a small military museum. Da Nang lies in the heart of the country, in a picturesque setting on the rugged coastline. It is a major industrial and commercial center, one of the main ports of the country.

Nha Trang is a beautiful seaside resort, situated almost in the center of the country, in the province of Khanh Hoa. Despite the proximity of large industrial enterprises, Nha Trang is one of the best places in the country. The symbol of the city is a huge statue of Buddha.

Ho Chi Minh City is one of the largest cities of Indochina and a significant trading port. During its development, it experienced many difficult years, as reflected in the architecture and numerous monuments of this great city. This is a noisy, bustling and ever-dynamic center of the south, the economic capital and cultural center of Vietnam. Its streets are a myriad of markets, shops, cafes and hawkers selling their wares on the sidewalk.

How To Use Online Reputation Management For Your Advantage

Online Reputation ManagementIn case you don?t know what online reputation management is and you have a bad status on the internet, then you must find out more about it. ORM is a method used by companies that received negative reviews on the internet. The purpose is to optimize the pages in a certain way so that the positive aspects will come first on a search engine results list, while the negative aspects will have lower rankings. There have been numerous cases when people were not very satisfied with the services of certain companies and they shared their opinion on different blogs and forums. The more those forums and blogs were accessed, the better their rankings on the search engine?s result list. However, those negative aspects may be a thing of the past and companies might want to erase that bad review. Online reputation management is the ideal solution and its purpose is to create a more positive environment.

5 Steps To Internet Security And Online Reputation Management
7 Best Ways To Protect Your Blogging Reputation And Make More Money

Online Reputation Management Techniques

If you are interested in learning more about ORM and promote your business despite its bad reviews, then you should take into consideration the following techniques. First of all, you should know that ORM is very similar to SEO even though their goals are very different.

Creating New Content

One of the techniques shared by both is creating new content that will promote the company online. That content will be placed on forums, blogs and also on social networks, so that a big number of potential customers will be able to see it. Existing positive content should also be promoted in order to prove that the company was not bad from the beginning and there was a period when many customers were actually satisfied.

Make Use Of Social Profiles

You should also build social profiles and pages and even create personal domain names. You will be able to convince people of your reliability by chatting on social networks and sharing different content that will strengthen your good reputation. In case you want to be more aggressive and regain your positive status faster, then you should try to ask site managers to remove any negative content they have on you. Even though most of them will not agree since there is a freedom of speech, others will decide that the negative content against you is not relevant for their forum or blog and will happily accept your request.

Response to Criticism

There are also certain proactive techniques that can build your reputation. If your main activity is selling products and numerous customers are criticizing you for not displaying the true features and capabilities of the items, then you could respond them immediately and even offer them free products. You could also try to post as a customer on review sites and online forums in order create a positive image of product.

All these techniques are efficient as long as you create quality content and you try to get in touch with the public.

A Few Tips on How to Prevent a Bad Reputation

The best way to make your business thrive is not earn a bad reputation. This is very logical and required if you want to succeed. Although it is good to know that online reputation management exists, if you are aiming high, you will have to be careful with what you say or do. For instance, if you want to use your website as a business page, you must not post personal information. Potential customers might not understand why your post on what you ate last night is on a page with electrical drillers. You need to keep it professional and try to attract more visitors as much as possible.

Additionally, even though you are allowed to comment and respond to other people reviews, it does not mean that you can act like a regular customer. You need to show respect and prove that you really know what you are talking about. You must come up with evidence to support your testimonies in case you are trying to explain something to a client, and never argue with them. You must not forget that your sales depend on their opinion of you and their reviews can be read by many other online visitors.
Another good way to avoid creating a bad reputation is always to respond to customers? questions. You must not ignore them and provide them with the necessary information.

All in all, online reputation management is the ideal way to get rid of the negative status and create a fresh, new brand that will attract new customers.

PFT: Jamal Lewis files for bankruptcy

Kevin VickersonAP

Despite all the excitement and anticipation in Denver given the arrival of Peyton Manning, the fact remains that:? (1) the schedule is front-loaded with potent offenses; and (2) the Broncos? defense has been suspect at times.

This year, the Broncos are breaking in yet another defensive coordinator, loading up on cornerbacks, and hoping to find a pair of starting defensive tackles.? Gone is Brodrick Bunkley; unsigned is Marcus Thomas.

Kevin Vickerson hopes to fill the void.

After dropping to 275 pounds last year in the hopes of better fitting into the team?s return to a 4-3 front, Vickerson has added a whopping 49 pounds, straining the scale at 324.? As Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post explains it, Vickerson hasn?t simply followed the Joe McKnight McDonald?s diet.? Vickerson?s body fat has plunged from 37 percent to 24.

?Coming off an injury, you could get out of shape with a bad body,? Vickerson said, referring to an ankle injury that landed him on injured reserve after only five games.? ?A lot of guys, especially D-tackles, would come back way over-heavy, sloppy, bad weight.? I?ve had that before, and I didn?t want that again.?

Vickerson has had to buy more food with less money.? He agreed to cut his pay from $2.5 million to $1.2 million in order to remain on the roster.

?You have to use your leverage when you have your leverage,? Vickerson said.? ?I was coming off a year of IR.? I didn?t do nothing last year.? I want to earn my money, and if that means I have to earn it again and show, ?Hey I am worth it,? then I?ll get it next year or get a long-term deal sooner rather than later.? A job is a job.? I?d rather take a pay cut and have a job, than not take a pay cut and not have a job and have my wife and kids looking at me like, ?What are we going to do??? You have to be smart about the situation.?

And so Vickerson will vie with rookie Derek Wolfe and veterans Justin Bannan and Ty Warren (if Warren takes a pay cut of his own) and others for a shot to parlay a contract year into a contract large enough to complement his 324-pound frame.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The suits have knocked off the superheroes at the box office.

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones' sequel "Men in Black 3" debuted as the No. 1 movie over Memorial Day weekend with $55 million domestically from Friday to Sunday.

That bumps Disney's "The Avengers" into second-place after three blockbuster weekends on top for the superhero sensation. "The Avengers" took in $37 million over the three days to push its domestic total to $514 million and become only the fourth movie ever to top half a billion dollars.

Distributor Sony estimates that by the end of the four-day holiday weekend Monday, "Men in Black 3" will have pulled in $70 million domestically and $202 million worldwide.

Universal's "Battleship" was No. 3 in its second weekend with $10.8 million, raising its domestic earnings to $44.3 million. Paramount's comedy "The Dictator" took in $9.6 million to finish fourth in its second weekend and lift its total to $41.5 million.

The Warner Bros. horror tale "Chernobyl Diaries" opened at No. 5 with $8 million.

"Men in Black 3" launched with a bit more cash than its two predecessors, which both had opening weekends of just above $50 million.

But the original "Men in Black" debuted in 1997 and "Men in Black II" premiered in 2002, when admission prices were much lower than today's. That means "Men in Black 3" sold fewer tickets than the previous installments.

"Men in Black 3" reunites Smith's Agent J and Jones' Agent K as they battle a new alien menace that travels four decades back in time to do away with the younger Agent K (Josh Brolin).

Among the movie's box-office highlights overseas were debuts of $19.5 million in China, $18.9 million in Russia, $8.5 million in South Korea and $8 million in Japan.

Distributor Disney estimates that "The Avengers" will take in $47.1 million for the four-day holiday weekend, lifting the film's domestic total to $523.8 million. That will put "The Avengers" within $10 million of "The Dark Knight," the No. 3 movie on the all-time revenue chart with $533.3 million domestically.

"The Avengers" will pass "The Dark Knight" in the coming week, leaving only two movies above it: "Avatar" at $760.5 million and "Titanic" at $658.5 million.

With $26.3 million overseas, "The Avengers" raised its international total to $781.6 million, and its worldwide revenues to just under $1.3 billion. "The Avengers" will soon overtake "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" at $1.33 billion to become the No. 3 film on the global revenue list, again behind "Avatar" at $2.8 billion and "Titanic" at $2.2 billion.

Overall domestic receipts for the four-day Memorial Day weekend will come in well behind last year's record of $276 million. Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com, estimated that four-day revenues this time will total $195 million to $200 million, about 30 percent below Memorial Day weekend a year ago, when "The Hangover Part II" delivered a $100 million-plus debut.

Hollywood remains on a record pace this year, with domestic revenue so far at $4.24 billion, up 12.5 percent over 2011 receipts, according to Hollywood.com.

But "The Avengers" and now "Men in Black 3" have been the only notable successes for the summer season so far, with big releases such as "Dark Shadows" and "Battleship" fizzling on the domestic front.

"We really need to get going if we don't want to have play catch-up every weekend through the summer," Dergarabedian said. "Some of these summer movies are just not doing the business people had hoped for in North America."

Fake Real Estate Agent Allegedly Bilked Buyers With Open Houses In

    ?

Paul Vencatasawmy, Fake Real Estate Agent, Scams Buyers Out Of $250,000 With Open Houses In Foreclosed Homes????????

(Huffington Post) ? One real estate scammer in Florida seems to have taken the term ?open house? a little too literally.

Paul Vencatasawmy allegedly raised $250,000 by posing as a real estate agent and collecting down payments for houses he didn?t have the right to sell, local news station WFTV reports. Vencatasawmy and his team of employees allegedly held open houses in foreclosed or vacant homes throughout Central Florida and used his ?nice guy? demeanor in an aim to dupe potential buyers, according to one man who ?fell in the trap.?

Vencatasawmy may have a novel approach to scheming homeowners, but the idea isn?t unique. Mortgage scams have gone up 60 percent already this year, in part because schemers are using February?s national $25 billion mortgage fraud settlement to get struggling homeowners to buy into programs thinking that they?re going to receive some of the federal money.

Notable scammers include Deo Buddhu of Connecticut who allegedly promised homeowners access to federal aid money then proceeded to collect an upfront fee, while at the same time telling his victims to stop talking with their banks.? The scam has been a boon for Buddhu, but it?s resulted in foreclosure for those on the losing end of the deal. Using a similar ploy, a Utah man funded his wife?s plastic surgery by duping about 200 homeowners out of up to $3,000.

Salford mayor Ian Stewart turns down Paul Massey's offer of help

Salford's city mayor has turned down an offer from election rival Paul Massey to work alongside him.

Mr Massey, who stood as an independent in the race to be mayor, said he wanted to take Ian Stewart up on his offer of working with anybody who wanted to help improve the city.

Mr Massey, 52, had claimed he could help develop youth services to give teenagers something to do. But Mr Stewart said: ?I have always given the assurance that I will work with any credible individual or organisation who conduct themselves with integrity. I want to work with people who are serious about tackling the issues that Salford faces. With this in mind I will politely be declining Mr Massey?s offer of help.?

Mr Massey said: ?It hasn?t surprised me. It is typical Labour. I was prepared to give Ian Stewart a chance ? you have got to be fair ? but I know what he is about now. I am going to be on his tail until he carries out what he promised the people of Salford.??

Time to Kick Off Barbeque Season - Live Safe

    ?

Time to Kick Off Barbeque Season

It?s the official end of Winter with Memorial Day Weekend approaching. It?s only fitting that May is National BBQ month, so if you haven?t already started grilling, lets get the preparations started.

It?s great when the long Winter days are behind and the lazy, Summer evenings have arrived. What better way to enjoy the outdoors after a hard day at work, than to get the Barbie lit and the sausages sizzling. It brings family and friends together in a relaxed atmosphere. There?s something adventurous about cooking outdoors. Is that why alot of men have no interest in cooking by traditional indoor methods, but when it moves outside they jump at the chance to get behind the tongs? So ladies, whenever the chance arises, suggest a BBQ as you may just get a night off from cooking. I?m not by any means suggesting that a woman typically does the cooking and men don?t. You just have to look around at the number of celebrity male chefs there are today to see that times have changed. We?re living in a fairer society today so male or female get behind the BBQ!

    Fire Up the Barbie!

As May is National BBQ month, why not make this the opportunity to kick off the BBQ season.

Every BBQ Master needs his Tools

You?re making the preparations; getting everything organised, so should the day be right, you?re good to go. Here?s a BBQ Master?s Tools Checklist:

    1. Quality BBQ Tool Set

Look for something with long handles so you avoid burns. If you buy quality now they?ll last you longer. There?s lots of choice. Some sets even come in a briefcase style case so you can transport them easily and store them away neatly until the next BBQ season.

    2. BBQ Mitt

You?ve heard of the?oven mitt?but have you heard of the BBQ mitt? Protect those hands. Look out for a heat-resistant, fire-retardant glove.

    3. Saucing System

A practical way to apply BBQ sauces ? the mess free saucing system. No more brush tumbling on to the ground. A must for anyone who likes to apply BBQ sauce.

    4. Grill Brush and Scraper

A handy brush for removing stubborn residues from the grill. Gets the BBQ ready for the next time.

    5. The BBQ

That?s right?you can have the tools but if you don?t have the smoke there?s no BBQ. Decide where you?re going have the BBQ. If you?re heading to the beach you might want to think about a portable one. You can buy a disposable BBQ or you could opt for the compact BBQ that you don?t throw away. If you?re BBQing at home I?d imagine you?re looking for a larger BBQ but now you have to decide between gas or charcoal. I?d much rather have the traditional charcoal one. The size of the BBQ is important too ? how many mouths do you have to feed?

    6. Lighter

Make sure you don?t forget something to light the BBQ; whether it be a match or a lighter.

    7. Other

If you?re not having the BBQ at home you?ll want to think about gettin a cool box to keep the meat and drinks chilled on the journey to the beach, forest or park.

Will you need rugs to sit on? What about portable chairs? These can be purchased cheaply at Walmart.

You might also want to consider a tray or pan to transfer ?ready? food to so the crowds can come and help themselves when they?re ready. This avoids burning the food by leaving it on the grill too long.

    What?s Cooking?

Instead of your ?basic? BBQ food like plain?sausages, burgers and baps, why not start looking for some inspiration from a BBQ recipe book. If you want to save a bit of money and not buy a recipe book there?s plenty of?recipes online.

Have a think about your sauces ? is there something you could make to ?spice? up the food? (excuse the pun). If you don?t want the hassle of making your own sauce, then just buy it. It?s handy to have a bottle or two in the cupboard for those impromptu BBQ days.?Jack Daniels?do a great range. They can be bought at most stores, including Walmart.

If you even fancy trying your hand at ?BBQ? pizza you can get a?pizza pan?from the BBQ. That?s right?you can even cook?pizza over the BBQ!! It might be an idea if you?re a vegetarian and don?t fancy the meat usually grilled on BBQs.

There?s other foods you can think of for vegetarians like?Corn on the Cob. You can also get a?vegetable grill?for the BBQ.

    BBQ Beats

Set the atmosphere of the evening with some BBQ songs.

It?s not just music alone you can provide for entertainment. Why not consider researching some games you can play? Or at least throw in a football to work off the monster feed you?re planning on having.

    Get the Barbie Out!

Get your BBQ?planned?so when the time is right you can?t make any excuses for why you aren?t going to BBQ tonight.

Car sales may be pulling into slow lane

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

By most accounts, the U.S. auto industry has been one of the major engines of the American economic recovery, with car sales helping to offset slow housing demand and other?indicators of a sluggish economy. But are those other factors now starting to give potential car buyers the jitters?

Even with fuel prices coming down, there are unsettling signs of a slowdown in showroom traffic and dealers' ability?to close sales,?said Art Spinella, lead analyst at CNW Marketing. And so, while May sales should still be up, year-over-year, demand will likely take a tumble compared to April unless dealers can deliver some solid Memorial Day holiday traffic.

    California readies autonomous driving bill

?Some of the steam seems to be coming out of the new-car market? as of midmonth, Spinella said.?While dealers are still seeing showroom traffic, closing rates have fallen sharply, he added.

?People are looking but are hesitant about taking the plunge," he said.

?Based on sales data from roughly midway through May, CNW forecasts overall U.S. new car sales will be up only about 6 percent?from May 2011, one of the smallest increases the industry has seen for quite some time. It's?well below the double-digit pace of 2012 overall, year-to-date.

And the figures might underscore the concerns. Spinella?said manufacturers may be ramping up marketing efforts ? notably including incentives ? to bring shoppers into showrooms and then help dealers close the sale.

CNW?s so-called Jitters Index took a sharp 7 percent?rise over year-ago levels, despite the recent easing of fuel prices.??Food prices, local taxes and federal tax policies that impact family economic decisions ? especially those attached to a long-term finance contract ? have a large share of consumers unwilling to pull the big-purchase trigger,? Spinella said.

What?s telling is that even the used car market appears to weakening, at least a bit.? Demand for previously owned vehicles has been even hotter than the new car market in recent months, in many cases reflecting consumers? financial challenges and difficulties arranging the larger loans for a new model.

Nonetheless, CNW data show that those who do get into a new car, truck or crossover have been paying more. Average transaction prices are up an average 8.74 percent?for 2012, a figure echoed by other recent reports from tracking firms?such as?Edmunds and TrueCar.

One particular concern CNW is tracking is the sharp decline in new car sales to young buyers.? In the late 1990s and early 2000s, they accounted for about 5 percent?of the U.S. market.? That?s now down to barely 2 percent?among 16- to 21-year-olds.

What?s unclear is whether it?s simply the result of high youth unemployment, a growing disinterest in cars, in general among Millennials, or both factors at play.

(AP) ? Going back to what he does best, David Cronenberg takes a visceral day-trip inside the cushioned limousine of a tycoon who cares little for the bloody, populist riots that explode outside his car in "Cosmopolis."

All the young multi-billionaire Eric Packer ? played by a steely-eyed Robert Pattinson ? wants is a haircut.

Packer spends the entire film, which premiered Friday in Cannes, crossing town to get one but is waylaid when the U.S. president's visit to the city causes traffic chaos. Yet when he eventually makes it to the barber, his haircut is interrupted and he leaves in futility, half-shaven.

For Cronenberg, a master of provocation, the significance of this probably goes beyond a debate on the quality of haircuts at barber shops ? though judging by Pattinson's slick red-carpet hair, it is probable he opted for a stylist.

In the surreal "Cosmopolis," ? full of long, introspective dialogue ? the portrayal of cold, moneyed arrogance is a warning against the perceived greed of current times.

The oversexed, 28-year-old Packer has made his billions as an asset manager in a dystopian Manhattan and is so self-obsessed he barely registers the violent protests against capitalism around him. The only time Packer seems worried is after a doctor tells him, in one of the movie's many comic moments, that he has an "asymmetrical prostate" ? with prostate-gazing an obvious synonym for navel-gazing.

Pattison ? who is most famous for playing a vampire in the teen "Twilight" series ? said he was nervous about the complex role.

"I spent two weeks in my hotel room worrying," he said, joking that "actors aren't meant to be intelligent."

But the ego and cynicism stretch beyond his character and infect the whole landscape.

The film starts with a quote: "a rat becomes the unit of currency," that turns out to be true for the movie's characters, who all seem to be part of a individualistic "rat race" each struggling to get his or her 15 minutes of fame.

The last scene sees a claustrophobic 22-minute face-off between Packer and a crazed man trying to assassinate him, played with standout brilliance by Paul Giamatti. The two talk on a couch, separated by a screen that Cronenberg said conjures up images of a Catholic confessional, exploring how selfish the world is.

Pattinson, whose past public appearances have caused mobs of teens to swoon, said he identified with the role, joking that he sometimes thinks "people are trying to kill me."

The film was based on a 2003 book by Don DeLillo, who was at the Cannes Film Festival alongside Cronenberg and said the film's dialogue was directly lifted from the novel. Still, at many points, the drawn-out dialogue seemed to have more elements of a play and the movie dragged.

At the post-screening press conference, Cronenberg justified with aplomb the film's introspective qualities. "For me, the essence of cinema is a person, a face, speaking."

Pattinson said he loves Cronenberg's other films ? which include the 2011 "A Dangerous Method" ? but the Canadian director said "I always had the feeling he'd never seen any of my movies."

The film has drawn inevitable comparisons to current financial woes and the timeless themes of greed vs. poverty and populist anger, but Cronenberg said any link to current affairs was accidental. Still, the shooting did coincide with global anti-capitalist protests that began in late 2011.

"(After filming) in the evenings, to read about the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations, it seemed at points that we were working more on a documentary," he said.

DeLillo said he wrote "Cosmopolis" after being struck by the massive gap between rich and poor in Manhattan.

"New York City streets at the turn of the century seemed suddenly filled up with white stretch limousines," he said.

People come to Cannes to dream, and this gritty, cynical film was seen by some Cannes revelers as a downer. So where was the hope?

"The hope is embodied in the fact that the movie got made in the first place," Cronenberg said with a dry smile. "It's not an easy movie to get financed. In Hollywood, $200 million is spent on movies that are extremely conservative, not-edgy. The hope is in the art."

Failure Is Not An Option: Why Kickstarter Hides Failed Projects

Fugees-Killing-Me-Softly-84622Dan Misener, in a fit of inspired data mining, scraped half of Kickstarter to find failed projects. He could not, it seems, find a single one. Why? Because Kickstarter hides them behind a non-searchable wall. They exist, sure, but you won't find them with google and they never, ever show them in their "Discover" browsing system. And good for them. In a general sense, Kickstarter isn't a marketplace. It's not like Etsy or eBay or Amazon where the slow-sellers sit next to the hot items. It is, instead, more of a competition. It's a competition for eyeballs, for cash, and for media attention. It is more a dog show than flea market, and you don't keep the ugly dogs on stage after the first round of judging.

Nuclear talks with Iran set to resume next month

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iran and six world powers wrapped up talks Thursday still far apart over how to oversee Tehran's atomic program, but with resolve to keep dialogue going as an alternative to possible military action.

Envoys said they will meet again next month in Moscow after negotiations stretched out for extra hours and a sandstorm shut the airport in Iraq's capital. But the two sides agreed on little else during two dramatic days of discussions that underscored the serious challenges of reaching accords between Iran and the West.

"It is clear that we both want to make progress, and that there is some common ground," European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who is formally leading the talks, told reporters. "However, significant differences remain. Nonetheless, we do agree on the need for further discussion to expand that common ground."

Saeed Jalili, Iran's top nuclear negotiator, offered a lukewarm assessment of what the negotiations achieved, in light of European and American refusal to lift tough sanctions as Tehran had hoped.

"The result of the talks was that we were able to get more familiar with the views of each other," Jalili said at a press conference after Ashton left.

The Baghdad discussions began with hopes for progress before each side accused the other of failing to offer meaningful, realistic proposals. More tellingly, they also showed that U.S. diplomats and others are pressing neither for quick deals nor for ultimatums that could derail the sensitive talks.

"We are moving in a step-by-step process," a senior American official told reporters in Baghdad's heavily protected Green Zone. "It's good for them. It's good for us. It's good for the world."

The tempered approach offers insights into shifting American priorities over Iran's nuclear ambitions.

The U.S. has gradually moved off its demands for an immediate and complete halt to Iran's ability to make nuclear fuel, which the West and allies fear could someday provide the foundations of warhead-grade material. Iran denies it seeks atomic arms.

Instead, the Baghdad talks unveiled a Western-backed incentive package that seeks to end Iran's highest-level uranium enrichment as a first step. That leaves open speculation that Washington could ultimately accept Iran's demand to keep its enrichment labs in operation ? although possibly at reduced levels to produce lower-grade fuel suitable for its lone power-generating reactor.

Such a compromise would likely require Iran to reciprocate with moves such as allowing greater U.N. nuclear inspections and suspending work at a bunker-like enrichment site south of Tehran.

The senior U.S. official said it was still "premature" to delve into this type of endgame bargaining. "It's having the discussion about the end of the road before you've taken the first step in the road," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the negotiations more candidly.

In Washington, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said significant differences remain between the two sides and that it's now up to Iran "to close the gaps."

"Iran now has the choice to make: Will it meet its international obligations and give the world confidence about its intentions or not," Clinton said.

The overall message, however, was somehow to keep talking. The Moscow negotiations are set for June 18-19.

"All parties in the talks want to gain time," said Bruno Tertrais, a senior researcher at the Foundation for Strategic Research in Paris. "The Western countries want sanctions to keep hitting Iran, and Iran wants to keep the talk of military action in the distance."

The open channels between Iran and the six-nation bloc ? the five permanent Security Council members plus Germany ? could push back threats of military action that have shaken oil markets and fostered fears of triggering a wider Middle East conflict.

Oil prices rose toward $92 a barrel Thursday with the negotiations failing to hit a fast-track stride.

Israeli leaders, on the other hand, have been highly critical of the talks, claiming it allows Iran to buy time and drive a wedge between Washington and Jerusalem. On Wednesday, Israel's defense minister, Ehud Barak, said even possible moves by Iran to open its nuclear facilities to greater U.N. inspect don't rule out a possible Israeli military strike.

The world powers opened the Baghdad talks with a U.S.-backed proposal calling on Tehran to halt the production of 20 percent enriched uranium, which is the highest grade of enrichment that Iran has acknowledged.

In exchange, the world powers offered benefits, including medical isotopes, some nuclear safety cooperation and spare parts for civilian airliners that are needed in Iran.

Staking out a hard-line reply, Iran emphasized it has every right to pursue uranium enrichment for peaceful uses. Jalili said Iran would consider suspending the 20 percent level but only if the world powers recognize its right to enrich uranium.

He also said the West would have to give in to demands to supply Iran with enough nuclear fuel to run a Tehran medical research reactor that currently depends on the 20 percent-level enriched uranium.

"It could be an issue for cooperation over discussions related to the Tehran reactor," Jalili said.

Western leaders fear the 20 percent-level material ? well above the 3.5 percent enrichment needed for energy-producing reactors ? can be turned into warhead grade at about 90 percent enrichment in a matter of months. Iran insists its reactors are only for energy and research.

Iran went into the talks urging the West to scale back on recently toughened sanctions, which have targeted Iran's critical oil exports and have effectively blackballed the country from international banking networks. The 27-nation European Union is set to ban all Iranian fuel imports on July 1, shutting the door on about 18 percent of Iran's market.

The senior U.S. official predicted the pace of the talks would speed up in upcoming rounds.

"We are urgent about it, because every day we don't figure this out is a day they keep going forward with a nuclear program," the official said. "And there are all kinds of assessments about how long it will take them to get there."

"We still think we have some time for diplomacy, but it's not indefinite," he said.

Talks resumed in Istanbul last month more than a year after an attempt at Western dialogue with Iran collapsed.

Iran pushed for the second round in Baghdad as a way to showcase its regional influence and close ties to the Iraqi government after the U.S. military withdrawal from Iraq. During the talks, a mortar strike outside the Green Zone killed at least one person and wounded eight, according to police and medical officials. The level of violence has dropped dramatically in Iraq, although deadly attacks on security forces and civilians are still common.
